Slightly off topic … but on topic in regards to the booger thread and it demons.
I'm not going to get bogged or booged down in a debate over this. I will simply outline the facts and move on.

I was accused of putting poo-poo on the boogers … how … by responding to a cartoon video that marcus posted in the thread … that in turn put poo-poo on the longboard fraternity. My crime … in a nutshell … was to ask him if he was a longboarder … a tongue in cheek remark … no not dining at the Y type tongue-n- cheek … but a throw away remark … a joke so to speak.
Marcus responded that his post was only a joke … but I was accused of being another elitist stand-up kook.
This is the response that had me kicked from the bodyboard thread … and shortly thereafter the topic was deleted …

Peer group pressure and herd mentality make being different a difficult path to tread. Some people relish the challenge other meekly join the herd.

I wouldn't consider body borders to be fringe dwellers ... its far more widespread than the kneeboard ever was or will be ... but there is a huge sense of guilt being harboured by some of the exponents of the act ... why ... simply because they are insecure and deep down they think the stand-ups might be right after all.

Markus you seem to have a issue with boogie boarding ... you constantly claim to not do it much any more ... only when its big is the claim ... I could use the same claim for masturbation ... or gay sex ... but if it feels good do it ... don't deny it ... be loud and proud.

To his credit Marcus seems to have moderated his moderation … although claiming to be openminded and lenient because he left the babe of the day thread open is somewhat open to debate.
The thread contained some great eye candy … but … certainly posting photographs of naked females on this site is pure and simply pornography … and should have (unfortunately) been locked and lost ... its no wonder there are very few females posting here.
Although I actually doubt thats the real reason for the lack of fair sex participation … its an example of lopsided moderation.

Maybe its like shaping a board … you've got the rocker and the outline right … just take out a little volume … I think you may find it will be more responsive.

I've scrolled … no thats right scrolled … not trolled … scrolled through other surfing sites … and Realsurf is by far the best general surf forum around … head and shoulders above its competitors.

Its interesting … it gets get rash … and crass ... irritating at times … mostly its relevant … its definitely irreverent … and that to me thats is the golden egg … the piss-taking … good humored banter … very Australian … very surf culture.

Some people get a bit precious occasionally ... or fired up in the heat of the moment … and sometimes the humour or sarcasm is lost in the written word … and that can be a problem at times.

This debate on the demise of realsurf seems to rear its ugly head every year around this time … why … fcuk nose.

I drift in and out of the site depending on whats going on at work or with the family … surfing … traveling … etc … I'm sure all these other activities disrupt the continuity of visits for most people with a life outside the internet.
Sometimes the threads are on fire and other times there just great steaming heaps-a.
At the end of the day not everyone will agree or get along … people will come and go … some will simply drift off … other will go out with a bang and/or a whimper … and yes some will have a hissy fit ... take their bat-n-ball and stomp off home … at times the forums will get ho-hum But thats life … roll with it.

Sometimes having rules, especially when there's anoniminity (read, no direct consequences for the individual)is like a challenge for some...

I think that's the major stumbling block here.
Censorship or the lack of it.
I remember one of the daily papers had a quote above it's editorial column each day. Something along the line sof.

"The freedom of the press cannot be limited without being lost".

Not sure that's the actual wording but, you get the message.

Well, having been apart of the press for many years I have a personal view on this and whilst I defend the idea of the freedom of the press, I think each medium must decide its own limits and adhere to them. Self censorship?? Probably but more IMO a case of making an informed decision on what face you want to present to the public and sticking to it.
So if you decide that naked photos aren't to be part of your website, then make sure that's made clear to all and then police it.
If you want discussions to be sensible and productive then make that clear and delete offending posts (replaced with a note to that effect) or flick them into a designated thread where participants can continue with them if they want to without disrupting another topic.
It's a fine line a moderator walks and they should be able to do it as they see fit, secure in the knowledge they are protecting the image of the site.
Sure you'll lose some posters who'll take off somewhere else (the well bred ones will just move on; others will make a song and dance about it and go down swinging - free choice). But a well moderated site will attract more than enough genuine members to replace them. We may even lose the entertaining sarcasm and biting comments of some but others will prove themselves capable of providing entertainment. Natural selection.

I think we're all agreed the points scoring ratings system is a no-goer.

It's counterproductive & destructive. Why should the mods put up with it if it is driving people away? More a 'commercial' decision than censorship. There's plenty of other places to sharpen your wit & cunning linguism without being a bully.

I swear some of you must be as thick as door knobs.

people including Rockin Ron were given many many warnings.
They were asked to stay out of the bodyboarders section repeatedly.
they kept coming in and breaking the rules.
we (lambert and i) had 2 tools to moderate, delete, split / move threads.
this started with SMnmtl he was pushing us how far we would go, he had a string of followers.
nothing worked.
Don, collnarra, butts, lambert and i discussed the option of locking members from sections where they caused trouble.
this ability took about two years to be given to the mods.
so we deleted his and all his followers posts.

then rockin ron, dinosaur, and others following in for a giggle were doing the same thing. so we deleted their posts.

Then i was given the option to give groups permission.
I denied that group permission to enter that part of the forum.

they wernt there to discuss bodyboarding, they were there to take the piss and f#ck it up.
some keep pm'ing me and saying "marcus why do you take the bodyboarding issue to heart blah blah, you take it personally".
I will repeat my reply to you that you may not have read or skimmed over.
