But yeah, thanks for posting and preventing me from ever wasting $750 on JJF wetsuit- which I could have done because I am a sucker for JJF marketing.

Is it a warm 3/2 or a cold 4/3? That surely is the key question

5 degrees for the dawny tomorrow, probably 2 or 3 with windchill.

I may even bust out the 4/3.

Todays Lennox Head water temperature is 20.2 centigrade

So a long sleeved springy would be all you need.

Thanks leej, interesting article. I only kinda skimmed it so didn’t see if it mentioned wind chill. Pretty sure that a 2mm upper body in a biting NE on a genuinely 0 degree day would drive me out of the water pretty quickly

Surfing presents unique challenges to thermoregulation because athletes interact with both the air and water, often in conditions that are cold and windy.

My italics for people who can't comprehend simple scientific concepts.

Read the details- experiments conducted in mild conditions.

Still, nice to read some actual science on it.

I think regularly filling your wetsuit with 20 degree sea water and floating around up to your waist in it as well would temper the effects of 6 degree air temp.

Yes as you say, nice to read some actual science (I note that the rip curl flashbomb has “a revolutionary lining on the back and shoulders that generates heat when stretched. As you move through the water, the Flex Energy lining will activate and heat your wetsuit”….) but it feels like a solution to a problem that doesn’t really exist

Steve remembers wetsuits being warmer when he was 20 years younger. Nothing to do with getting older and colder faster Steve?

3.4 degree apparent temp when I paddled out this morning.

I wore the 4/3- which was nice in between sets.

I paddled out at 6am in the 2/2 which was more than sufficient.
Pumping as well.
Can’t believe how many cars pulled up for a look and drove away.
Had it to myself until 7 and one other guy came out.
Then one more at 7.30 when I came in.

Must have been pleasant floating around in the warm water up there Buddy.
The only wetsuit I owned until I moved to Newcastle was a sleeveless vest.
Bought a springy then.
