Yeah GS, to protect me from the Antarctic air swept up from the south by our extraordinary cold fronts.
If a hood is required on the northern rivers it's definitely required here.

Re: that wetsuit discussion...
I’ve never worn a hood even in Vic.
Tried one once or twice only.
But I did get surfers ear bilaterally.
So in hindsight I would have worn one for that but not for comfort. They’re a pain in the arse.

Re: that wetsuit discussion...
Yeah I don’t wear one, even in the middle of winter. But I don’t stay out for ages.
I’m gonna try and wear my 3x2 Heatseeker all winter. Booties will be on soon.

I would wear a hood more, but the way it blocks my hearing really throws my ……something….I don’t know, it’s just weird.

I’ve got a good O’Neill one and a crap Ripcurl one. Oneill one has an adjustable strap. Only wear it if it’s freezing with a howling wind.
I’ve had one ear bored out years ago and always wear ear plugs.

Re: that wetsuit discussion...
From a purely scientific perspective a hood makes way more sense than booties especially in high wind chill environments.
Wind chill (apparent temp) was below zero on this morning, for eg.

Re: that wetsuit discussion...
Your air temp is probably way colder than your water temp, so that makes sense. The water temp down here makes booties pretty much essential. Otherwise you won’t feel your feet after about 10 minutes.

Lol. A hood needed in Perth. Lol.PeepeelaPew wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2024 3:01 pmYeah GS, to protect me from the Antarctic air swept up from the south by our extraordinary cold fronts.

Hood defo needed here with the katabatic-enhanced winds.
Yeah I said katabatic-enhanced.
It's katabatic AF 'round here

Re: that wetsuit discussion...
I surfed southern Tas for nearly 10 years and I can recall only once wearing gloves that I borrowed from my bro (his diving ones) . Never wore booties or a hood
Had a great steamer that kept me pretty much dry underneath unless it was big and had to go under lots.
Winter water temp averaged 8-10 degrees, and there were days when snow covered the peaks. Katabatic!
Fast forward 30 years and my feet were numb after 10 minutes in the Tulla tub last month.
Yep, relative yoof back then and maybe coz we were always stoned when we surfed contributed to our hardiness.
I remember days of being out deckying in freezing air temps and getting back all frothed to surf our local point or beach break near sunset hardened by it.
Getting out of bed in the morning on days off wasn’t as easy.
