I think Beany just goes down to the beach and has a look. It’s terrible behaviour, I know.
:D :D I’m amazed we could even surf at all before the internet saved us, with it’s periods and such

Old school surf forecasts involved looking at isometric charts and seeing how far away the low was. Further away by default meant longer period but so what?
Unless you are somewhere like Indo, Fiji or Hawaii it’s largely irrelevant to the average punter.
Are you suggesting swell period is irrelevant to the average punter?
I'm just an average punter and swell period is pretty bloody important to me.
Well I know it’s important as an element when I’m surfing. Is it important to me in planning to go surfing?
Not really.
Really? So if you saw a 15 second period south swell arriving tomorrow it wouldn't impact your plans to surf Bondi?
This is all a bit like when I used to do phone interviews for consumer research.
Swell Period is one of a number of measurements related to swell.
The others are size, swell direction, wind direction, tides.
The other information is more important to me going surfing

:D Got that right The Marauding. It does give the surf forecasters something to talk about though.

And to think I though a swell period was the duration of time that a morning horn lasted ... without the involvement of outside forces, that is.

Made my way down to Mr Shearers neck o the woods today for a social engagement...but stopped to look at the point. The water is still murky as it is up the coast ..and the east swell was abit saw tooth..but ok according to a few chats in the carpark. There was a local Boardriders comp down in front of the pub that looked a bit more hectic.

Nearly got blown out to sea today but it wasn’t crowded. Parking no problem.

Went down for a look. Bondi was well overhead in the sets and closing out. Guy runs down from the car park with one of those eggy looking Softlite boards. Does some stretches and starts to paddle out right in the middle south of the flags. It’s really shallow for a long way out there. There’s a bit of a break in the swell but he keeps taking his time diving under waves and then starts diving under waves with is board behind him. It’s still small but then after he does this for about five waves a medium set hits. He keeps getting smashed.
Larger set comes and he keeps getting flogged. He hasn’t really made it past where he waded to. Finally his leg rope snaps.
He comes in, goes up north and breaks his leg rope again. Cracks me up.
Bronte was holding better.
