Lets put that in context however...... Latham turned up a few days before and virtually said that if he was PM the whole forest would be protected and logging to be reduced equalling major job losses. Johnnie said the opposite and was subsequently revered in the ALP 'heartland'
That was a booboo it lost that election.

As opposed to Howard............................................

Would have preferred Latham.

I agree

I'd been part of the ABH (Anything But Howard) camp since forever

Electing Latham would at least have broken the Howard stranglehold & obliged the Liberals to rethink & regroup (sans Howard)

Plus, we'd have avoided Work Choices

I think what stands out most about howard's time in office is his complete disloyalty to anyone & everyone

There basically wasn't anyone or anything he wasn't prepared to bully or **** over in order to remain in power, simply a gutless fool for Janette's (Hyacinth Buckett; as she was known around the traps) petty kitchen cabinet fantasies

Petro Giorgio is about the only Liberal from the Howard years who comes away not looking like a complete piece of shit

Nah mate, read my extras emboldened and those I named prior. Problem was Howard suborned most small "Ls"by threat or promise of "riches".

"Howard suborned most small "Ls"by threat or promise of "riches""

What on earth did he offer Phillip Ruddock in order to get Ruddock to perform such hideous acts against refugees & asylum seekers?

Apparently Ruddock is (or used to be) pretty liberal (small L)

Nowadays, due no doubt to selling his soul to Satan, he looks like Monty Burns from The Simpsons

And even his daughter went public about how shameful his actions were as Immigration Minister

Ugly ugly times

Thank god it did. I mean Howard was a nasty piece of filth but imagine being stuck with that ratbag latham as PM. The guy was not only a stupid bully he was mentally unstable as well.
How do you define "mentally unstable"?
Was it better to have a a leader like Howard who:
- lied at every opportunity to stay in power
- sent men and women to their potential death in Iraq out of sycophancy
- bullied our poorer neighbours via the "Pacific Solution"
- wanted a GST on food that would cripple the poor
- bailed his brother's company out of insolvency while others went to the wall
- took money from a nutbag cult who dont even vote!!??
- made Australia an international pariah by refusing Kyoto

The list goes on. It will go down as some of the darkest days of this country's history. Lies, corruption and the complete lack of conscience.
The Howard doco is frustrating but beautiful in the sense that those clowns are confirming every suspicion we ever had.

Don't forget...

- paid bribes to Saddam Hussein to buy our wheat
- chased the MUA off our wharves using security guards & attack dogs
- refused an apology to the Stolen Generation
- wanted Australia to remain a constitutional monarchy
- only begrudgingly & belatedly spoke out against Pauline Hanson
- suggested pre-emptive strikes against nearby Muslim nations

for Janette's (Hyacinth Buckett; as she was known around the traps) petty kitchen cabinet fantasies

Here was the great irony. Here was the reality.

While George Bush called him a man of steel, while his followers in the coalition fell over themselves praising him and his great leadership skills, the great saviour who was gonna save us from all from the madding asian and muslim hordes, who was gonna tell us who could come into the country and the circumstances under which they would come,

but in his only meaningful relationship, for he has no friends, he was abjectly bossed around by his wife, who he obeyed diligently.

A real leader, a leader's leader, a man to look up to, indeed!

True, oldman

I asked a friend from the Canberra Press Gallery who he thought genuinely liked Howard (rather than simply who admired or kow-towed to him)

He replied that David Barnett & Pru Goward were the only possible candidates

"I dont think real leaders are in the job for longevity, as it would seem was howards main aim"

Too true

Mungo McCallum's comment on Howard was that he was "the only Australian PM of whom it could be said he would NOT have earnt more money had he not entered politics"

In other words, every other PM was in it for what they could achieve

Whereas, for Howard, politics (and becoming PM) was the ONLY game, the only achievement

Consequently, I dont see anyone rushing to sign Howard up as a member of a board, a public speaker or a patron of a charity now that he's unemployed

Even John Hewson said "you're going to have to carry Howard out in a box"

Why?

Because he had nowhere else to go. No-one & nowhere else wanted him

One of JWHs quotes.
"Beware the spleen and fervour of the converted."
I dont know if he was repeating that but it has a bit of form about it.

Weapons of mass destruction anyone?

Invading a sovereign state to oust a dictator for involvement in a terrorist act that he wasn't involved in?

Children overboard?

Introducing the GST?

Can't quite put my finger on the rudsters equivalent dishonesty.

I forgot how big the anti war rallies were. I'm glad I marched. Didn't change anything but silence is criminal.

Are we allowed to talk about Obama yet or should I start a new thread?
