what can anyone really say at a time like this? we're all willing you to pull through, longbum.

currently over in indo for work and heard about this while in medan the other day. it came as a shock, and only found out today that it was a rs regular...

i've heard that the chopper pilot had a run-in with the indonesian authorities - hope it works out for him.

thinking and praying for you and your family, darren

a few quotes from a mate who lives over there:

"He was on the Barrenjoey with John M, surfing Thunders.

"It was six foot and they were on the outside break towing in, but he wasn't towing on that wave - he'd paddled in.

"Very lucky to get him out of there so quickly as it was halfway down the bottom of Pagai Selatan, the bottom island, and Thunders is a very remote spot.

"Derek, a Kiwi flew Darren from Sikakap, the main town in the southern Mentawai, to Padang. He ran out of daylight on the trip across with Darren and had to land in a football field two hours south of Padang. Then Darren was taken by ambulance to Padang and Lear jet to Singapore. Now the airforce has impounded Derek's chopper cause he didn't have a permit to fly - he gave himself permission as Darren could have died. It is radically isolated out there so Darren was very lucky to be in Singapore as quickly as he was and it was a brave and compassionate act from Derek. He didn't even have aviation fuel and flew on the highest octane fuel you can get here which John had double-filtered."

With McGroder and the Barrenjoey crew he would have been in great hands, knowledge and communication to get things happening...best wishes for a speedy recovery

let me join the other R'surfers in also expressing my best wishes to Darren and his family at this time.

BTW i would say the chopper pilot was most likely Dr Derek Allen a
Kiwi GP/surgeon who runs a charity organisation called
Troppodoc based out of Telos island further north.

did a wonky boat trip up there last year and actually helped him out doing a full on clinic on a tiny island.

the helicopter had been sitting behind a fence in ?Padang for ages
waiting for Derek to cut through red tape and start using it for his island clinics.

very fortunate for Longbum, if this is the same kiwi 'Derek', to have a doctor/pilot turn up when youve just had such a horrific accident.

yeah thats the guy
heres some info straight from the fellow himself

Update 21/5/08
Yesterday I was called to a medical emergency in the Mentawai Islands below the Tello Islands. A 19yr old Australian surfer had a cracked neck. I flew down in the helicopter and the choice was to transport in a hard collar, either in the helicopter seat taking 60mins, or 20hrs by the Barren Joey Surf boat in seas that could be very rough.

After seeking specialist advice, I flew the patient to 50kms short of Padang – had to stop here due to fading light. An ambulance was sent to meet us. I escorted the patient to the airport for departure at 12.30am. He is now safely in Singapore.

Now the helicopter and I are with the police. I am not under arrest, but have been at the police station all day giving a statement and waiting for the Airforce to come and talk to me. The helicopter has been detained at the moment.

I am tired, as have only had 2hrs sleep last night. As well, I have a sore throat and have lost my voice. I have 50 people waiting back in Tello to be seen by me, so is very frustrating.

Have just had an interrogation from the Airforce re the helicopter. I told them that Jakarta had been called, but a helicopter was not possible from there and the man would die in 20hrs on the ocean with such a high fracture.

The Airforce now saying that I have to move the helicopter to the military airport by truck. They will not let me fly it, but I may ask if I can fly it to the Military Base with one of their men accompanying me instead.

Will have to wait and see what eventuates. I will keep Margaret updated, so that she can post my progress on the website.

an amazing story, he saved Darrens life.
pulled off by an unsung hero, doing great things up there for little recognition.

check out his website below. there,s heaps of interesting stuff on it

To All who would like to help Longbum

Hi All,
You may of heard last week about a surfer breaking his neck surfing in Indonesia.
His name is Darren Longbottom who owns Zink Surf Shop in Kiama.
I have known Darren and his family for over 20 years and used to take him and his brother Dylan surfing all the time.
We are having a fundraising night on 3/7/08 at Shellharbour Workers Club and are asking for donations, monetary or otherwise to auction off to raise funds for Darren, his wife Aimee and twelve month old daughter Bowie.
Please see the attachment as to what has been committed within 48 hours from Thursday evening last week.
Support has been tremendous, however more is required to help the family and costs they would have incurred.
Darren is a seasoned traveller and would not have been without insurance, however his rescue from a remote place has not been without incident.
24hrs to get to hospital with a broken neck is considered quick in this country, he was lucky, an NZ Doctor who owned a chopper got to him within 10 hours.
The Doctors story is another tale see www.troppodoc.com his chopper is grounded due to not having flying permits now.
Check www.realsurf.com longbum in horror surf accident and follow links to the forum, page 4 will explain further the suffering Daz endured.
Hope you can help out.
A bank account will soon be set up for donations to be deposited, electronic donation will be available.
Will let you know when it is done.

Regards,

Ian Cope

Hi gang,
thanks to everyone that sent a fax over to daz, i've been told they have all made it to their destination.
we have also managed to JAM the intensive care units fax machine...!!! great job. :!:
As such, the hospital has requested that family and friends cease from sending any further fax's for the time being, as the machine is also used for other hospital functions..!?

Cheers

G'Day All,

Had a very busy afternoon with Steve Conti organising the benefit night for Dazza.
A bank account has been set up for donations, at this stage the bank has advised us not to publish an account number for security reasons.
Should things change, I will update with new details.

Should you wish to donate then please send a cheque payable to:

Darren Longbottom

mail it to:

P.O Box 3001
Minnamurra 2533
N.S.W.
Australia.

Minnamurra, the town of Dazza's favourite local wave Mystics.

Apparently tickets sales for the benefit night have been on sale today and from reports we have heard were moving very quickly.

Cheers all and thanks in advance.

Sorry All,

If you are proposing to send a cheque for Dazza as per previous post.

Could you please attach a note with your email address or fax. no.

We would like to give all a receipt when we receive your donation.
Fax or email is cheaper than Australia Post.

This is all about Daz, Aimee & Bowie, not lining Aussie Posts coffers.

Bad enough we will have to pay Bank Charges for depositing cheques.

Thanks All

Ian

First of all my best wishes goes out to Longbum and his family.
Secondly, let me know how the tickets are selling. I was talking to a producer here at nine and if they need a push I might be able to get a mention on Mornings With Kerrie Anne, with the graphic of the date and time, I know the demographic may be not the best but all mentions are good for those who have donated. You also never know who else will give it a go. Footy Show could be worth a go as well.
