Steve, here’s one of your surfing interests, Matt Warshaw talking about giving up surfing on the Surf Splendor podcast.

https://youtu.be/V2v-HF6VJGI
Just watched that. I think moving to Seattle would be a good way to discourage ever going surfing.

Saturday’s event may be the first WSL competition at UrbnSurf, but it’s unlikely to be the last. There’s a clear value-alignment between wave pool surfing and WSL’s desire to make the sport more accessible, including through reforming the qualifying series and pushing towards gender equality in the sport. “That really mirrors UrbnSurf’s approach to surfing,” says James Miles, the pool’s head of partnerships. “We’re constantly asking: how can we provide more inclusive access to surfing?”

For purists, the increased use of wave pools in the sport can feel sacrilegious. But Miles highlights the numerous upsides. “There are some real advantages that wave parks can bring to surfing,” he says. “While waves might be an infinite resource, quality waves are a finite resource. A lot of the line-ups around the world are very competitive and the atmosphere that comes with that isn’t conducive to newer people entering the sport, gender equality and a more diverse cross-section of people enjoying surfing.”

Big and blustery today. Went down to Bronte and watched a lone surfer try and paddle out from the beach. After a flogging and going nowhere he miraculously got a break and managed to get three quarters of the way out. Then inexplicably he took off on a small wave that closed out. He then started paddling again and copped about thirty waves on the head going backwards into the beach before he gave up.

What was funny was that he had a lull and could easily have paddled another 15 mtrs. That would have put him in a way better position. A lot of the bigger sets were breaking better and an easier take off. Plus you could have pulled off and got into deep water.

Not at my age. He was young and fit. I admired his persistence. Definitely armchair analysis :-D-: It was high tide and breaking right through the ocean pool.

Good to see Shelly local Molly Picklum win the Pipe Masters. She trains here with Micro (nice fella I have to say) and is a very respectful young woman never dominating the breaks like she easily could at times. Well done, they train hard.
