Re: Surf magazines
argh I can't help it.
Sites.
I like Beach Grit because it's such a blatant click baiter and occasionally breaks actual news
theInertia began its life as a supposedly democratic open source truth teller, swiftly became one of the most pompous and self righteous outlets in surfing history, then spun out and is now sorta pop gossip school with the odd thought piece from well meaning kooks
Stab is kinda boring, all the faux commentators, a bit tedious really
Surfline is the most reliable and surf-engaged of all the surfing sites and has the best forecasting act. Coastalwatch tries to be the Surfline of Australia.
Swellnet does a great job, good surf action and forecasts, Stu Nettle is a very serious and determined editor and its news section is all v adult in the "serious media" sense of the word, Stu holding the WSL's feet to the fire over their nonsensical numbers claims was good stuff and will stand the test of time. Some of the op pieces bore me half to death though.
magic seaweed and co, who really gives a shit.

Re: Surf magazines
Mags, I think every magazine has its moments, undoubtedly the most boring surf magazine in the world is Surfer magazine, it's only any good when Doherty writes something in it. Otherwise, dead set you would think surfing was golf in the 1960s. It lands with a dull thud, every time.
Australian surf mags are pretty much kicking the US mags' arses right now. White Horses is the cleanest and best of 'em I think, exy but great value. The other main ones, as mentioned I think they all have their moments, I'm kinda gonna be seen as biased because of my relationship with Surfing Life so I'll just shut up now.

Re: Surf magazines
ASL just seemed lost for a long time after the Otis Carey racism row.......just bewildering editorial decisions and mags that weren't on the pace and weren't aligned with any clear direction.
Last one, about the Goldy, was definitely the strongest for a while.
Surfer and TSJ are easily the best of the seppo mags. Surfing should really give up print altogether and just go online. It's stuff just reads like embarassingly out of date web material.

Re: Surf magazines
I picked up a Surfer magazine in a hostel in Ecuador and by the end realised there wasn't a single piece or photo featuring a non WSL CT surfer in it.
