Now I realise, Yuke, you said no point in lamenting the past, but you now seem fully approving of dishonest advertorial.

It's interesting going back and looking at the old surf mags.

Early Tracks was great, 80's era Surfing World was a high water mark.

Then the 90's advertorial era kicked in and they turned to absolute dogshite.

No wonder all the mags went broke- why would people pay for poorly written advertorial?

Probably made a fortune from it early on then I assume toward the end, the advertisers saw less value and offered up less money, leading to even more ads and advertorial to cover the shortfall until it was basically a catalogue.

Too true buddy and steve!

Are there any decent surf mags now?

Remember Tracks had proper surfboard design articles. Col Smith on channels, Mitchell Rae on flex and concaves, Fitz on all sorts, McCoy on the zap and dome vee etc etc.

And SW, even the ads were good. Remember the Hot Buttered ads? Epic.

I remember the hot tuna ads, then reef.
Around the time I was going through puberty.

Surfers Journal is good Cranked.

I have to acknowledge Surfing World too- too expensive for me to buy though.

I have a current subscription to SW.
Just got my 3rd.
Seem to be running at about 4 editions per 18 months.

One thing I did like about the subscriptions in the 90s was that you’d get the mag in the mail a few days before the shops, but I’m getting SW after it’s in the newsagent already.

First world problem.

Yeh, it’s decent.
I’ll probably go back to just buying off the shelf the ones that really pique my interest.

*Mitchell Rae

Do you work in marketing or advertising or something, Yuke?

Yes it’s been going on a long time, doesn’t mean we should approve of it.
Ah yes Rae ... my bad.

I once pursued a career in advertising, but couldn't stand the fuckwittery of many involved in the craft. Most people in business are involved in marketing of some sort, unless of course you're simply a minion, a small cog in the greater machination of the endeavour ... and there's a million and one ways that marketing can be pursued, from subtle to sledgehammer tactics. What I don't approve of is the constant advertising of gambling during sports broadcasts, especially when its whitewashed to seem like part of the commentary. Someone writing a favourable piece about Crescent Head doesn't phase me in the least, regardless of who's selling what.

Real estate and gambling are definitely the two biggest cash cows used by marketers- and the two ripest for unethical behavior.

Real estate even moreso IMO, due to the obscene amounts of money involved.

Real Estate is very lightly regulated compared other asset classes, so any spiv can get into it.

For decades it seems Australian politics, especially in NSW, has been dominated by three major entities – the two major political parties and the gambling industry.

And local councils have been dominated and corrupted by real estate developers.

No surfing but took the kids to Boambee Creek where it opens into the sea. Stunning! And yesterday, and again just now, to the Never Never near Glenifer. Deep clear pools of cool water with rope swings from ancient fig trees.
