engine oil off boards; help!

Post by bombora » Mon Nov 01, 2010 11:21 am

Scumbags broke into my and neighbour's garage in our apartment block on Saturday arvo, around 4pm. My neighbour caught one of the sh*theads as he was taking out a kayak and a mal from my garage, but not before they had trashed both our garages. They broke a 2 litre bottle of motor oil as they trashed my garage and the oil is over everything, including several boards. How do I get engine oil off a board? Would a can of normal degreaser be OK on the glass? F**k this stuff is hard to get rid off. Would the degreaser be the best thing for the concrete garage floor as well. A colleague mentioned nappiesan? I've given up on some clothing and oldish wetties and some fishing tackle which is just soaked with oil, but got to get the boards de-oiled and the floor is a dangerous slippery ice rink.
Any suggestions?

That sucks! Let us know of any gear that got taken, in case it ends up in cash converters or whatever.

Get some oil soaker pads, not sure if hardware stores stock em but certainly from a boating supply shop.

Best to wipe up as much oil off everything first, then degreaser.
Shouldn't affect boards but caution if in doubt.

The pads are very effective in the first instance as they will collect up all the oil off surfaces and reduce the amount of degreaser required.
There is a product -'goo off' ?? I think, that removes oil from concrete. Again, check instructions before putting onto boards.

Meths might be safest on boards after all oil is wiped off.

Thanks skipper, forgot about those soaking pads, had em on my old boat. Didn't lose anything (just stuff had to throw out as covered in oil or broke as he trashed garage) as my neighbour the legend chased the scumsucker down and tackled him and held him until police came. Getting a case of beer for him on way home tonight.

Did you try using the sh!theads head as a mop?(soaked in a bucket of degreaser first)

you can either cake it up with talc, or break it down with something.
lemon juice, detergent, eucalyptus oil, vinegar solution

Thanks for the other suggestions fellas. Hey Lessormore, scumbag suffered some nice cuts and bruises and grazing as he was being ""held down"" by my neighbour (cops told scumbag "what a pity" as he started whining). Reckon you can guess what culprit looked like? If you said shiny baggy basketball shorts, Addidas trainers, T-shirt and back to front baseball cap, you'd be right.

Gday Bombora
for the concrete you can use cement powder or talcum powder
the powder soaks up the oil and then you broom it into a dustpan.
It is best done on dry concrete.

the same with clothes, most oils can be removed by putting a heap of talc on the oil stain and let the talc soak it up, but before you wash it off.

not sure about the surfboards, i would try degreaser as a guess... hey it works great for getting rid of "go home booger" off car windscreens.
didnt seem to mess with the car paint (which was in a bad state anyway)

hope that helps

if you want to go the gentle gentle approach, try using dawn dish washing detergent, also soak your oiled fishing gear in detergent then disassemble,
wash the drag washers in acetone to remove water, then oil and grease real as usual.

i have an old bench top dishwasher that i have washed engine parts in before, came up pretty good.

another good grease cleaner is Jif, but it does bleach clothing

Hang on a minute , you have a dishwasher big enough for a board to fit in and you expect Bommie to get up at sparrows to use dishwashing liquid that's harsh after what he's been through.
Jaffa, I'm opinionated, and I'm sometimes right. So?

Thanks for the tips fellow humans. Living next to a servo has its advantages: They gave me a big bucket of sawdust, which is what they use. There's currently an inch covering the entire garage floor hopefully soaking up the oil. Thn onto the fun part of sweeping up, degreazing and then the hose.

Hot water and soap suds should move the oil off the boards pretty well.
There are lots of specialist products available these days for cleaning up oil but you still can't beat Ajax or Jif powder laid on the concrete, slightly dampen it and move it around with a soft broom. Then leave it there for a while. For a final treatment leave the dry powder on there for a day or so and then hose off. Will remove the oil AND the stain.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Get a heap of foam dust from your local shaper and rub the boards over with it in a big bunch in your hand. Will take a while but at least it's fairly harmless on your board. Was probs about time you changed the wax anyway...
