We have a Canon G10 ( was top of the point-and shoots) and a 1000d (bottom of the DSLRs)
Highly recommend both (not sure what the G11 is like)

If you want to be able to change lenses and use GND/Polarising filters the 1000d is the go
if you want to just pull it out of your backpack/hand bag and go snap the G10 is the go

What i find annoying about using the G10 on auto is sometimes the computer takes over and you get a bad shot while it tries to do face recognition and red eye reduction and all the other crap at once, you press the shutter and the subject has moved before it takes the shot (like a phone camera) and sometimes it uses the flash for no reason over exposing (i think?)

However, you can set the G10 to manual like a DSLR. it has all those dial thingies ( sorry i am no photog)

In bright conditions using the LCD can be painfull on the G10 (poor viewfinder)
Zoom is limited on the G10 (compared to the older G9)but you can buy a 2x lens

The DSLR is mainly up to the photographer as mentioned above but you can put it on auto like a point-and shoot too. ( which is what i do mostly)

I need to do a course eh!

thats my 2bob worth, hope it helps

here are some pics

Josh,
Its all about what YOU want out of photography.
If DSLR is the route you choose, then checkout the offerings from Canon/Nikon/Pentax.
Go to a camera shop and "feel" what brand works for you, not what camera looks good or has 75,000 diferent settings or what Jack said was the ants pants. Its got to "feel" right in your hand, ergonomics might sound like a wank but it does make a difference.

If you want to get serious about photography, then you need to think about spending good money on good glass (lenses) NOT the body.
Happy to discuss.

WARNING: PHOTOGRAPHY IS AN EXPENSIVE HOBBY!! You have been warned.

Some very useful sites for anyone thinking of purchasing photography gear (DSLR or not).
http://www.dpreview.com for indepth reviews on camera bodies, with side by side comparisons.
http://www.fredmiranda.com for glass and camera reviews.

The net has a mutitude of sites for reasearching, just hunt and ye shall find.

Video???? You buy special cameras for that, they are called VIDEO cameras

Hey Butts,

Thanks, yep, I stand warned...though "hobby" is not quite it. All the shots of boards on my webby are done using my phone so far. So I will step up a notch with possibilities there, as well as shots of crew riding my shooters.

Deev, yeah my previous post disappeared too. Mods maybe? It mentioned money and transactions...a no-no?

fanks again dooooods...

Hi Josh, I asked this same question on the Photos thread and the advice is correct. I ended up blowing the crap out of my $2000 budget and buying the Nikon D90 with twin lens kit (135mm +200mm), which can be had for $1600 with cash back. I also sprung for a Sigma 500mm lens, which was around the $1400 mark, reduced from $1800 at camera house. Defo go a DSLR if yur serious.
Your opinion is worth as much as it costs.

thats right and just about the best one on the market is the Cannon 5D mark II
Nah, think RED/SCARLET and then we are talking.
Limitations of DSLR Video is well documented.

dinosaur wrote:Well the limitations of the red cameras. cheap build, unreliable, No warranty service in Australia, temperamental etc etc may not be as well documented but they are certainly well known within the industry.

The scarlet may be different, may be better. I don't know. The red track record is not a very good one though.
Dino, you would certainly know better than anyone. 8)

I quite like what scarlet could deliver, but will NEVER be able to justify, let alone afford it.

I might PM you with some discussion around 7D/5DMKII specifically. As you know I have one, and it does have
its limitations. Its nifty/nice to have, but I don't see me using it other than from a novelty perspective.

Chillin, glad your loving the new toy. Sigma is a good lens, should provide exactly what you require.

So Josh, HAVE YOU BOUGHT ONE ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!! :P

The posts disappeared when Don was doing something in the background and hit "delete" instead of "approve". He deleted the whole forum and had to re-load it. Probably from the most recent back-up so a few posts disappeared.
I know this coz he e-mailed me. He was doing something to get Turtle back into the fold after he changed his e-mail address and I had sent him a note to tell him Turtle was locked out.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

This is a good thread but I'm not sure Josh needs to go to DSLR if he just wants shots of his board. A good quality digital camera will give him everything he wants for a lot less and still be good for family. travel snaps.

Scarlet doesn't exist.....

The Red Images speak for themselves.

It's not like the 35mm film workflow is any picnic.

Super 16 is a fcuking hoax for TV drama.
Better off shooting well graded digi-beta or progressive HD and spending the money on someone who can write a script.

Anyway did u get a camera Josh?

WHO is J.O.B. (Jamie O'Brien's new flick) was partly shot on the Canon 5d mk2.
The 7d and 1d4 both have some better features.
Still very clunky in a number of ways, but great results can be had.

Hey crew,

Possibly a stupid question but ............

Is the software provided with CANON Camera going to download when your running Vista ??

Or will I have to find a software program equivalent ??

dinosaur wrote:I meant feature films and commercials. But why is it a hoax for TV drama?

Wishing for better scripts in Aussie TV im afraid is pie in the sky stuff. The very best TV dramas, American ones have per episode budgets close to ten times the series budget of an Australian production. Writing is a big part of that. saving a few bucks on the upfront cost of film stock is not gonna cover that. especially when post costs end up being the same.

Doesn't take a budget to make a script, just some QC when it comes to the script edit.

Why fcuking wait for film developmetn and telecine when you can just have instant playback and edit?

Think Super 16 is for tryhards who want to capture the magic of fillum when it;s content and narrative that makes the deal.
But that's just my opinion.

Working with George we've gone from 35 to single chip HD.
Seen so much wasted money from monkeys standing around getting paid to do nothing.

Its possible you may need one of these updates. I can't confirm this as I was running the Mac version.
Digital Photo Professional is the software for editing jpegs and RAW files.
