Hi all,
Just a bit of a wondering thought... I know there are good waves in Africa, this is pretty well documented, especially around South Africa but how good are the waves further north?
Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia? There must be some good waves in these countries?? Be one hell of an adventure going there too...
Anyone know anything about these places or better yet, been there?
Surf on the African east coast??

the waves are insane mate - Mozambique in particular has perfect right hand point breaks.
The best empty surf you will find is on the garden route - this is between port elizabeth and capetown - around jeffereys bay etc, just drive the coastline and you'll find dozens of empty point break setups, totally mind boggling!

Mozambique can get Epic but not much along the coast so you will need to go prepared, but you're almost guaranteed empty surf. Transkei is another option. Great surf options between PE and Cape Town, certainly not uncrowded and you will find some empty points but you become very much apart of the food chain when sitting out the back.

North from Mozambique is very patchy for swell as madgascar blocks all the SE - E swell.
Madagascar is the place to go as the coral reefs around Tulear are like Fiji - and offshore in the prevailing winds.
Tanzania is patchy - you could get lucky but probabaly wont. Zanzibar has waves, as do Pemba and Mafia islands, with great coral reef passes - but prevailing winds are usually onshore. Same goes for kenya coast - plenty of reefs offshore but swell can be lacking and winds crappy. If you follow the coast north from Mombasa then you have a deathwish - you will dissapear before you can say "AK-47".

I've travelled all that stretch from Somalia South to the Cape.
Realistically there is nothing worthwhile north of Mozambique. There are some waves on islands such as Zanzibar, but unreliable and not great quality, and IMHO not worth the hassle of getting a surfboard there unless you are made of money and can just fly in. Crowds are definitely not a problem in the water.
Do not travel north from Kenya - you will probably die.
Mozambique had some nice surf although when I was there getting about was quite difficult.
South Africa is excellent.
