Re: Mini Simmons

All the stuff about planing hulls makes me realise how bloody smart Tom Morey was. Love them or hate them, body boards are an amazing bit of mass produced design.
Does he get royalties for every bodyboard sale in the world?

Softies

Theres a lot around these days and they can be very handy to snare a wave in the flags when the clubbies have roped off the best/only bank on the beach. Any particular favorites? I've had an old MacT I bought off an ad on here for years. It has gone great but it holds water these days and can only b...

Roy_Stewart wrote: then he suddenly realised waht was going on with the designs and said " they are falling objects like bombs "and his face lit up with understanding, but I digress. . . .
.
He hit the nail on the head there. Not every day you have a surfboard compared to a falling bomb.

Re: The 19 foot 'Olo of the Sun'

How can Roy's boards be outmoded? Doesn't something have to be in mode at some stage to become outmoded? They are in mode with Roy and so remain as in mode as they ever have been or ever will be. Although after seeing all the recent traditional hawaiian boards and guys ride bits of commercial insula...

Re: Australia vs. USA Culture

The thing is America just has more depth because of scale. So for every one screwball there are 100 over there but also 100 more interesting tangents to any one style or point of view. We are practically an extra state these days anyway. Except the bottom hasn't just fallen out of our economy. Ever ...

Golfs the big one isn't it?

Comp surfers get paid to compete. Paid free surfers get paid to surf.
Am I envious of comp surfers?
Nope.
Paids free surfers?
You betcha.

Re: A Slice Of Paradise

Medewi is obviously waiting to have you set up a villa in the middle of their cow paddocks so it can turn into Seminyak. You never really own anything in Bali but hey you can live the dream one way or another. Personally I'd rent on a long term lease because thats all your really getting anyway when...

Re: Genuine picture from Mentawai for Iggy.

Definitely think people get feet and metres mixed up these days but I definitely only listen to calls that mention wave face to body measurements. Geezs there are enough variables with out muddying the waters with esoteric measurement systems. I too would find 5 or 7 feet ridiculous measurements if ...

Re: Genuine picture from Mentawai for Iggy.

I have a feeling that those who voice discontent on the validity of the ignatious' scale probably didn't go through the rigours of grommethood Nah they treated you way worse than that in the 70s, gibber. It got much safer in the late eighties. They still measured wave faces then though, even if the...

Re: Genuine picture from Mentawai for Iggy.

I would probably say the change came when the pro curcuit started and everyone adopted island style wave calling after hanging over there. So I believe you Iggy when you say you haven't heard any other way of measuring wave size. But a lot of old calls have been rewritten in retrospect. I remember r...

Re: Genuine picture from Mentawai for Iggy.

Alas I have come to accept this stupid method of wave measurement. Like the changeover to american shoe sizes but its still completely fabricated and serves no sensible purpose other than to give the impression that youve been to hawaii and regularly surf trip[le over head waves which you call 6' to...

Re: Ask Carroll

Nice little take on MP. Don't you think its kind of weird that his early hull type boards are "in" again? I mean even at the time they were just a quick transition to much more refined craft that fitted hollow waves better. Also as someone who really did idolise the guy as a grommet I'm shocked at h...

Re: The Carroll Question Thread

Since your retiring do you plan on buying a mini mal? If so will you be entering any mal comps as you enter the autumn years? Is Bondi becoming more appealing to you as the future of surfing? Is graffiti a valid art form? Will you feel a great sense of relief not to answer these questions any more? ...
