Re: Where did you surf today ?

I wear a hood if it’s really windy and cold. The wind factor is the main issue though.
I’ve got a couple. O’Neill one is the best.

Re: best surfing movie ever

Great footage. Midget and Nat killing it. I’ve still got a very beat up old log with a Reverse D Fin. Or it would have if I hadn’t ripped it off to reset it and never put it back on. Pretty well completely delaminated on the deck. Used to be fun to ride. Bought for $20 in Marrickville. A mate found ...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

All true…but basically it’s just asking for a different size board if there’s not one that size in the shop.
Obviously different if you are a midget or Andre The Giant.

Re: Just general surfing stuff

Its nice to have your name written on the blank in pencil. Here’s the 6’6” rounded pintail that’s exactly like all the stock boards only fatter.

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Had fun on the mal again. I sat on a little left but couldn’t catch any. Then went over to the crowded Mal bank and got a few. Then the lifeguard started telling everyone to move out of the area as they were putting the flags up right in the middle of where everyone was surfing. This was at about 11...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

I don’t go to shapers. Been there done that. If you live in a smaller quality surf zone with lots of local shapers…..sure. They’re a bit thin on the ground around Bondi. I got a couple of boards of Rabbidge. Funnily enough friends down there wouldn’t buy a board off him and were getting very ordinar...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

That’s my point. You aren’t Joe Boggs rocking up to a shaper and “developing a relationship” with them. If I was to rock up with a couple of boards by different shapers the question would be: 1) You want me to copy this? 2) Why don’t you go to the original shaper? 3) How dare you buy someone else’s ...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

All well and good but I’ve been able to try boards by a stack of great shapers by buying their boards secondhand. Plus a few experiments that either went great or were a huge mistake. No way that would happen if I stuck with one and no way I could afford to do it buying them new. Not to mention boar...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

You obviously know a shaper who knows how you surf.
You ride a kneeboard don’t you?
That’s a specialised niche to start with.

Custom is okay if you actually know the shaper but usually they just think your a kook who spouts rubbish about design.
And they'd be correct most of the time.
100% Just like mechanics or most tradies. That’s why it’s a massive wank for most punters to go down that path.

Re: Just general surfing stuff

I’m a cheapskate and have always bought secondhand boards. Rarely bought a new board ever. I got one custom board that was okay but couldn’t see the difference between that and stock. Got a custom for my son when he was young and the shaper didn’t listen to what I said when I ordered it and obviousl...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Junior reckons he caught one of the biggest waves he’s ever caught at Bondi today. There were big rights down the south end. Apparently one guy decided to catch a left and ended up getting flogged into the Icebergs by a 6 wave set.

Re: Just general surfing stuff

It can be. Nth Bondi…Tama sometimes. Given the dodgy crowd it’s handy. The 8’ Softlite Chopstick has chined rails which make them way superior handling. Also didn’t realise until I just snapped it theyve got a metal or fibreglass reinforcement on the wooden stringers. This boards taken quite a beati...

Snapped my foamy today. Got about 5 years of constant use out of it after I bought it for the missus. So can’t complain.

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Interesting. I've been working on a proposal to pump sand from the river mouth to improve the setups for summer swells. It has definitely changed. Back in November there was no sand at all at 33rd avenue where I always paddle out https://maps.app.goo.gl/8hxWsYN8WnwcF52FA . It was bare rock at the b...
