Re: Bong in big trouble

Firstly B'bongs retai strategy was a poor one - running a large retail chain is very different from being a manufacturer / brand. But is the wider sense of how the world works.... One theory of society is that there are producers (e.g. farmers in ancient times) and plunderers (who live by raiding th...

Re: surf betting

The oddsmakers will find it very hard to price up surfing accurately - huge variables in the sport. So they will mainly offer poor odds and make their money on the overround (offer 1.9 return on tossing a coin and calling heads). So it will be hard to make money as a punter and not that easy to foll...

Re: Mentawais Vs Maldives

In the Mentawais in peak season it can be pretty busy. I heard of 4 boats at Lances Lefts all day. That is full on unless you are very comfortable with taking off way inside. If you are a little more cautious and sit wider, you'll have 20 guys inside you and will get scraps and wide ones like back i...

Re: People are soooo deluded they make me sick !!!!

Assuming your board is at least okay, and you know how tosurf okay, the single biggest factors in performance are

wave quality
general fitness
knowing your board and its sweet spots
knowimg how to make the most of waves

Minor fin changes would be minor compared to above

Re: best post-surf lubricating eye drops?

Had really really sore eyes after a 6 hr session in Indo a few years ago and I was even wearing a hat in the water. Must have been sun reflecting off the water and salt. Anyway they hurt open and even more shut. I had eye drops but they did nothing so I ended up taking panadol. I have read up on it ...

Re: How to wipe out when pig dogging

Well to answer my own question...... A more balanced stance (less crammed up) with a lighter hand on the rail seems to keep you in a better spot for either a shift to the pull through the back option or to the Andy Irons advice on yootoob of diving forward. Avoiding pulling on the rail too much also...

Re: Stand up paddling seems slower than if prone

Wow ..... this looks like fun and makes more sense to me- SUP downwind riding little wind waves out to sea - "surfing" for miles on windy days miles from surf and surfers. Check the secondvideo out! Get heaps of afternoon sea breezes like that with no surf round here. http://www.seabreeze.com.au/for...

Re: Stand up paddling seems slower than if prone

I've surfed my old log windsurfer board in small waves and wouldn't even consider doing so with anyone else nearby. So big heavy and dangerous once it was loose. My dad got hit in the chest by an out of control kayaker in the surf when he was around 75 year old and he reckoned his heart stopped for ...

Re: Stand up paddling seems slower than if prone

Just watched a youtube vid of a SUP racing a kayak - the SUP totally smoked the kayak. So looks like I've only seen a few gooses who can't paddle their SUP fast yet or had the shorter ones that don't plan so well. The guy had good technique and you could see the leverage with the paddle but he had a...

Re: Stand up paddling seems slower than if prone

Still not conviced on the speed thing. Two arms in the water almost constantly when paddling prone can get phenomenal momentum and flow on a big board. As I said on a 10 ft windsurfer I've felt like a speed boat but had a go with a kayak paddle once stadning up with a big blade and it was not fast. ...

Stand up paddling seems slower than if prone

Never ridden a SUP but have paddled an old windsurfer board lying down and you can just fly with two arms and no paddle. But when I watch SUPs paddle they look slow and awkward with one small paddle but people tell me the SUP paddle is fast. Saw a girl on a longboard today and it sure looked like sh...

Re: Getting caught inside at HTs and Rifles

Really like the look of Rifles but the Vids sure make the paddle out look hard if it was very consistent. At HTs / Lances Right one evening we saw a set of 5ft waves come through with lines to the horizon. A mate was filming and 2 1/2 minutes later it was still going. I counted at least 14 waves in ...

Thanks. Sounds like decent gaps between sets might be important to keep it manageable.

How to wipe out when pig dogging

Been improving my backside tube stance and rode a few heavy tight shorebreak tubes today that left me wiping out with my board right next to me.Went over the falls on one. My older stance wasn't that extreme- more a tight squat that let me usually turn into the face and go bumb first through the bac...

Re: Surfing Tazmania

not easy to get good surf there in a short trip. The best spots tend to in protected areas needing big swells. Day to day it is just very average beach breaks for most locals.

Getting caught inside at HTs and Rifles

HTs - I have surfed it a few times but played it very safe on the end section. What sort of trouble are you in if you wipe out at the Office take off spot further over? Oviously no fun but is it manageable or are you in real strife? Rifles - have not surfed here but from the videos it looks tricky i...

Re: Going Troppo

After my recent first trip to Indo I reckon some form of hat makes a huge difference on the clear sunny days. On a couple of hot days where i forgot the hat my head and face felt like they were burning up even with sunscreen. It cut short my time in the water. One day with a hat on I surfed for 6 ho...
