Re: Minimal to fish transition

Don't rush to buy anything, or panic that you're going to miss the 'sale'. There are plenty of options, and always another sale 'just around the corner' Work out what you want / need first. Yep, I know, that's the hard part! Even consider second hand ... a lot cheaper, and as you i...

Re: Minimal to fish transition

Still looking around and intending on riding some boards before ultimately deciding but I walked into my local store and found that they were having some great specials on Mark Richards boards as follows: Puffer fish: http://www.markrichardssurfboards.com/boards_fish_puffer.php http://www.markrichar...

Re: Minimal to fish transition

Before prescribing a specific fish just a couple of questions:- 1) How long, wide and thick is your mini-mal? The bigger the minimal, the greater the adjustment to a fish. 2) How old and fit are you? Your weight is not an issue but if you're not fit and/or "older", say 50+ a fish could be a challen...

Minimal to fish transition

Hi all, I haven't been surfing that long (I've only been out about 15 times) but already I feel as though riding a minimal is holding back my turns and manoeuvrability. My instructor has also suggested that I'm decent enough to think about buying a fish surfboard. I can pop up very quickly and can m...

Squash tail on a mini mal for a beginner?

Hi all, still shopping around for a starter board. Found a 8'6" hand shaped board that has caught my eye - 21.5" wide and 2 7/8" thick. It has, however, a squash tail which I have not come across yet. FWIW I am 6'2" and 176 lbs. Am I better off with a squash tail or am I better off with what I've us...

Re: Board for a beginner

I'm eying a second hand custom mini-mal. I am a bit concerned about two things -

One, the glassed on fins. I figure I am better off with removable ones to start with, in case I break one.
Two, the fact that it's 8'1" but only 21.25" wide, and 2.75" thick. Is this too narrow for me?

Re: Now my wife wants a board

Will this suit? http://www.nspsurfboards.com/funboard-76.html I don't want to get her anything that's too small, and difficult to get waves on. However, I'm thinking about her actually getting out to the breaks as well, which I think she'd struggle with anything much bigger. What do you guys think f...

Now my wife wants a board

She's a total beginner, had a group lesson a couple of years ago but couldn't manage to stand up (mind you she only had the opportunity at 4 waves or so). About 63-64kg (that's 141lbs), 177cm (almost 5'10"). I will be buying a board also, as a complete newbie, so we will learn together. FWIW I'll be...

Re: Board for a beginner

Cheers, so there's no point in trying to get a 7'6" or something which might last forever? Or am I likely to want to sell that, too? I know a smaller board will stunt progress a bit but I am not sure how much. I've had recommendations from anything from 7ft (above) to 8'5"+. I think I will definitel...

Re: Board for a beginner

I'm a mountain biker ;) Thanks - so ideally what dimensions am I looking for exactly? I don't want to grow out of the board too quickly - I tend to persist and pick things up quickly, but I don't want to get something too small that's going to frustrate me, either :) EDIT: What about this off eBay? ...

Re: Board for a beginner

I'd keep the width and thickness. Anything around 7-foot would be fine to learn on. Look for a board that has no splits in the glass where it's taking on water. Brands don't mean much for your first board. Just stick to around 2 3/4 thick and 21+ inches wide and that's enough beef under you to padd...
