Bit of press following the sale of Rip Curl to Kathmandu for $350m - that price implies RC is a pretty profitable business (could be $40m a year). Maybe some of the family were looking for their early inheritance ?

Does x-Large refer to the suit or the rooster?

Rip Curl has been in play for several years now. The founders wanted to sell but didn't want to sell.

It's profitable but perhaps not as profitable as the purported new owners will make it. They have a number of reasons for wanting to buy it aside from immediate gain.

They also just bought a hiking boot business for 75m. On an acquisition binge. As you say significant debt.

Well if you can't grow revenues (or profits) because you're constantly selling goods "on sale", standard response is to buy another business or two which gives you time to find "synergies" among the businesses.

What will that look like? Centralised back offices (marketing, accounting, procurement) and reduced expenditures (like NC noted in his article) in teams, endorsements and sponsorships.

I have a pair of Oboz hiking boots. They're really good. If you can get them on one of the Kathmandu sales they're incredible value.

38% increase in profits from last year. You but splash out 400m in total to find synergy. Revenues have been slipping so they are good at cost take out, I guess.

it's funny the day before the announcement I was walking past the Kathmandu shop in Byron, wondering how the fcuk this shop full of puffer jackets and cold gear was going to make money through spring/summer/autumn.

Doubt the town will be big enough to host both a Rip Curl and Kathmandu outlet.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.
