Momentum Generation

Post by steve shearer » Mon May 06, 2019 1:31 pm

I thought there might be a general interest in this review I wrote of the HBO documentary film about Kelly and the momentum gen.
Jog on if not.

10 realsurf points for adding the word Dionysian in your review!

Nicely done, Steve.
The absentee dad/overarching need to succeed story is a tale many have seen played out in many places.

Steve I'm not quite sure how to say this.

I like your writing, always have, even when you're obviously phoning it in, deep in a rd3 recap on the Euro leg. Helped send you to Tahiti and think this is one of the best pieces of surf writing I've read.

But the sycophantic response to your every utterance on beachgrit leaves me a bit queasy. I'm going to have to figure out how to disable the comments section.

Yeah I didn't think that much of it, felt like they were fitting a much more interesting story into a screen play cliche sized box, that kind of switched me off from the outset.

Benji struck me as the most interesting boy, and his response to Jeannie's loss and their trip to Tavarua, and the aftermath, the way it sort of broke him up and brought her back, that was the story hidden behind that whole Hero's Journey/Lost Boys shtick.

The actual movie, Momentum, had a much bigger effect than this one even though Momentum was just a dumb little surf movie.

Finally watched this on the plane. The best of slim pickings. Lucky boys to have a crash pad like that.

An incredible surf situation and Steve rises to the challenge and produces one of best, or maybe THE best, surf writing to match it.
