6'9" custom Jim Banks, clean and never ridden

Post by Nick Carroll » Thu Nov 22, 2018 1:42 pm

Check it out. 6'9" x 19" x 2.5" Banksy, hand finished in Bali, five plug FLV pintail. Gorgeous board, not quite right for me, I know it and so have preserved it unridden for a lucky owner.

I prefer the 'ridden just a cpl of times' boards tbh.
Much cheaper :)

Did it fail the under the arm test?
Or do you just have countless other boards around the same size and need to pay off that hi-perf mal that's on it's way?

Fine throughout, soft and easy from 2/3 back to the nose pulled to a hard edge through the back third and tail.

The FLV rocker/bottom is kinda like a forward fee but blending into a double concave through the centre vee, plenty of rocker to set it off, flat tail exit. Banksy likes these as a quad, I was of the three fin persuasion on it so we just put five plugs in. Glassing is 6x4x4 and feels strong without weighing down the board.

I think this is a really great board for the right person, the waves I want to ride it in need a slightly different foil, as it is it would be sick for someone who wants to ride it in good quality to exceptional surf from 4' up to maybe 8'. No fins with it, you'd need to fit your own set.

Oh I'm gonna get another one off Banksy with the foil I'm after, same length etc.

Sorta building a long term quiver right now for what I want to surf in the next 10 years or so.

My two board travel quiver for some years were 6.6 squash and 7.0 pintail Jim Banks, heavily glassed, 1/4” stringers. Reliable as fcuk they were.

Looks great. That's what I hate about custom boards though. Joe Bloggs would just have to live with it if it wasn't quite right.

Well no, Joe Bloggs could sell it and get another one, just like me.

Maybe Joe Bloggs wouldn't detect the not quite rightness till down the track though. Like, this is a gorgeous board. It's only not quite right for what I'm after.

Indeed they do look out of wack Cedric old mate. I’d say it’s something to do with the angle of the photo.
I saw somewhere on FB that Nick informed him of the fact that the board wasn’t what he’d hoped and Jim said he’d have another ready soon. For a guy who gave up shaping he sure makes a lot of boards. Jim likes the dollars and will end up being the John Farnham of the shaping world. He was number 16 in the world at one point and if it was now he’d never need to work again because he’d be the free surfer type of guy earning loads of cash. Instead he does what he needs to do to get by.
