Agree. Not so many slabs but better waves all round (as SS notes) and the beachies are generally superior too.

True. The North Coast has no World Class Waves. There are no point breaks on the North Coast and any wave that breaks is never long or hollow. That's why it's so uncrowded up there all the time.

In deference to Geoff McCoys fixation with, and veneration of single fins, I was prepared to give them another go, so I brought three Zots to Bali this time and some Gulwing and Winged Keel fins.

I've tried both before and, compared to a thruster or quad, I've have had no luck with the Gulwing and some success with the the Winged Keel. To start with and to ease my way into single fins, I also brought a 6" single to use in a 2+1 configuration.

Yesterday the surf was a bit unruly early (first light is 5:30am) but settled down a bit by 7:30am. Just four out with sets head to head and a half, still lumpy. First wave and I found that the 2+1 completely changed the boards performance compared to the quads I have been using for at least a year.

I was expecting it to be stiffer and preferring longer arcs, but it wasn't. It was looser, far easier to turn, and to bury the rail. It could also surf in longer arcs as expected, and hold a fast line without pumping, but the choice of using short arc rail burying turns was a real surprise. Under heavy back foot pressure I could feel the single centre fin letting go as the fin started stalling, but the rail fin (a very small quad rear) had just enough bite to hold until the rail took over.

The wind turned very light offshore and conditions were near perfect. It took another hour for the crowd to hit a dozen and meanwhile we racked up a lot of good waves.

After that surf the single experiment can wait... I went out and found another 6" and a 6.5", and set up all 3 boards as 2+1s.

Mark where it is now. Half an inch further back and it'll be a down the line board, half an inch forward it'll probably be unrideable.

I like small upright side fins with a bit of base, probably how your quad find are.

Don't "know" him. But I think I might have met him a few months ago.

We were having a typically overpriced Noosa coffee after a surf and he turned up, having known one of the guys in our group from their school days.
He also knew a couple of real estate blokes I've known for yonks. Made sure we knew one of them was gay (which I knew anyway and the others couldn't care less) and put shit on the other guy who I've known since we were 20 and navigated me to a rally win back in 1976.
