Well the other obvious factor is exposure to UV light. That rots fibreglass and resin and makes foam collapse. It's funny that spray painting a protective coat hasn't become a thing on Poly Boards.
Always find it funny to see boards sitting naked on backpackers balconies for months.

Are you talking about painting the blank or the glass?
Grant Miller told me he paints his blanks white to slow the yellowing process.
All the Tuflite boards I’ve seen had painted glass.

painting the blank white can interfere with the chemical bond between resin and blank.

keep them out of the sun when not surfing.

What specifically is wrong with an eps core?

two things.

It sucks water (scientific fact).
And it doesn't ride as well as a PU core (subjective reality for many people).

I was thinking about painting the glass. Does tend to make you rash more but hey the boards last longer. It does show how conservative manufacturing processes are that they haven't really addressed this.

I can only imagine. That he has experience with painted boards is astounding enough. That he reckons it causes rash is making my mind boggle like it never has. Must put the paint on top of the wax

Wrapping the blank in bubble wrap before glassing also extends the life of the board.

I've also heard of people coating the blank in SPF50+ Banana Boat. I draw the line at that, electing, instead, to apply it to the finished board.

Well, aj, unless they've changed it you should be considering another product. Banana boat SPF 50+ is/was not as effective as stated. I'd expect your surfboards will soon be requiring medical attention

Closed cell polystyrene doesn't suck water. Its been around for about 10 years and is what is used by a lot of manufactures (Surftech 10 years ago, Firewire I think still doesn't use it).

I don't really care which construction I ride (my last two purchases have been epoxy/polystyrene), but I do find it takes a few surfs to get used to it, so I don't like to change on a daily basis, especially McCoys as the poly ones are very heavy.

I got burnt to shit a few months ago wearing banana boat.
The worst part was that I'd torn strips off my youngest for not applying enough the day before when they got burnt.
Turns out it was a bad batch.

I think it may have been more sinister. It was brought to my attention 2 summers back that they were in deep shit over it. I'd been using the black sport 50+ for years and it was never 50+

They did change the formula apparently and I'd notices it was more slippery than the old stuff so not anymore a very good one for the hands prior to surfing

Given the timing, your episode might have just been a bad batch. Regardless, you're a bad parent

That rots fibreglass
Fibreglass is chemically inert. Sunlight does not rot it. It also does not break down in landfill. Fibreglass is Evil!!!

Steve may not have had a lived experience of a PU/PE board breaking down over time but I sure the hell have, numerous times. The deck and tail gets kicked down and the foam fractures, the resin goes brittle and cracks, the board slowly leaks even through very small cracks that only a lunatic would try to fix. Eventually the flex in the board becomes soggy and it loses all its performance edge.

I take care of my boards now and don't tend to surf any one board that much but the ones I have surfed a shit load in recent years have all done something similar. They usually end up creasing out of sheer exhaustion.
