I went last year. Stayed on an awesome boat owned by a french couple. Had a pretty good time and caught heaps of waves but yep it was pretty crowded and yep full of europeans who are a bit dangerous although they aren't as street-wise in the surf so you can often out-manoeuver them. Didn't see many barrels. Lots of ugly russian blokes and beautiful russian girls. We just surfed the cokes/chickens/ninjas area and i was surprised how most of these breaks were pretty concentrated in one area. Would have loved to have gone further afield; maybe next time. All in all a good experience but I wouldn't rush back. The owners of the boat say it has changed alot in the last ten years aka the government there less secular then ever and the coral there is bleaching and basically dying in front of everbodies eyes to the point where the frenchies were looking to get out and wondering if it would all be there still in 20 years. Oh now i remember, all the resorts are basically gearing up for the huge explosion in chinese tourism which is interesting seeing as they they don't surf and can barely swim . All they have to do is to rake up the beach ever morning and they're good to go so has a real feeling of sterility. Best thing we did is headed into one of the islands and had a couple of games of soccer with some of the locals. Afterwards cooling off at the local beach I think I must have swum through a sewer outfall or something and proceeded to get the one and only super-massive ear infection of my life. Plane trip home hurt! :-D-:

Yeah reef bleaching is getting noticeable it's sad.
At Pasta more Chinese tourists they don't hang on the surf side of the island.
I was told by staff there was a problem with them catching the little crabs and boiling them up in the hot water jug
Erase.

I don't know why there hasn't been more take up of the Indo experiment of running a mild electric current across the reef.

well I know most of my thoughts on this subject have been penned already in my own (pure masterpiece)thread...but I went there again this year so can add a few things...I know I am amongst friends here

so low crowds...user friendly waves...and of course avoiding Israelites, is essential for the almighty these days

so early season...March...ticks all the boxes. Winds are perfect...avoid the 10 oclock rush and surfing near alone is easy. SUrf has been pretty consistent in the three foot range most days I have been there...and I have never met an Israeli...the locals hate them...they come later in peak season. Lots of inexperienced Europeans

Accommodation options have taken a significant change for the better too. There is a 4 star resort on the is;and now...roof top pool...quality food and rooms...good price

Its not for everyone but I love the place

I have been to Sri lanka and Papua new guinea...but not twice

Because if you look back, there's advice about all different places. Fiji, PNG, Indo.
