Shall we have a little ripple for Realsurf's men of letters? Nick giving us the taste of the event without ever descending into that awful buddy-buddy, I touched a pro and I liked it stuff that sometimes characterises man-on-the-spot reportage and steve pulling no punches over on Beachgrit, weaving the autobiographical into the action to devastating effect. An excellent comp graced by excellent writing. Well done gentlemen

Steve has been hypnotised by Putin. Eventually everything he writes will become a soviet manifesto.

I like very much the writing
The word 'froth' shits me, but. Dunno why.

Luckily, BeachGrit did not indulge Shearer's longing to attend any surf comps for, um, journalistic purposes. He's much too impressionable to be let loose in such a fashion, what would have ensued has a notable precedent:
We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to
take hold. I remember saying something like “I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive…”
And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like
huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a
hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: “Holy Jesus!
What are these goddamn animals?” Then it was quiet again. My attorney had taken his shirt off
and was pouring beer on his chest, to facilitate the tanning process. “What the hell are you
yelling about?” he muttered, staring up at the sun with his eyes closed and covered with wraparound
Spanish sunglasses. “Never mind,” I said. “It’s your turn to drive.” I hit the brakes and
aimed the Great Red Shark toward the shoulder of the highway. No point mentioning those bats,
I thought. The poor bastard will see them soon enough.
...The sporting editors had also given me $300 in cash, most of which was already spent on
extremely dangerous drugs. The trunk of the car looked like a mobile police narcotics lab. We
had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid,
a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers,
screamers, laughers and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw
ether and two dozen amyls. All this had been rounded up the night before, in a frenzy of highspeed
driving all over Los Angeles County – from Topanga to Watts, we picked up everything we
could get our hands on. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a
serious drug-collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

Re: J-Bay Pro 2017
I had a lovely little exchange in the carpark this arvo...I've been working, and writing and staying up late and waking up early,......today I was really hallucinating.
saw a bloke I know in the carpark, old acquaintance who'd been getting a good kick out the free entertainment at BeachGrit. He pulled out a bottle of spiced rum and we indulged in a few swigs in the afternoon sun. There went the surf but the tide was killing it anyhows. I felt magically intoxicated immediately.
I probably came out about minus 20 dollars an hour for the weeks labour.

Really should carry a bottle of schnapps or similar in the truck in winter. Great idea.
Sleep well Steve.

I haven't read a single word from anyone about J-bay ... too busy locked into the friday deadline for print. I have managed a few surfs here and there and bumped into people I know, and everyone one of them to a man all commented on your j-bay beachgrit work.
so the common man, on the hard streets of palm beach, Steve. they're all your people, and I'm not sure you can put a price on that.

Great writers can't surf.
Meanwhile, I think this group of backpackers had earlier been shown the ropes by Steve on one of his great North Coast tours.
