Don't play coy with me Carroll.
You telling me you don't know what pace you're doing based on the feel of the stroke?
You aren't interested, but you noticed.

Well I am totally interested from the POV of coaching this girl toward Molokai. Re the U17s on skis etc, as long as they are upright and paddling I'm stoked. Their max effort varies between 65-80% of my max effort. Some of them would totally kill me in the pool, a couple of 'em are swimming 50sec 100s. But the ski is really about surf skills and they're a long way off that right now.

Anyway I gotta go do a set with the superchick tomorrow, a 12k loop out of Newport, six weeks ago I'd have killed her, now she is gonna kill me.

Lol I'll bet you're upright and paddling , furiously, in the shower.Nick Carroll wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2017 7:25 pm

easy 8.5k with the superchick. fortunately for me she did a proper swim squad this morning. saw a big humpback and its calf about 3k straight off Bilgola. no boats, super quiet.

Re: swimming/paddling/misc water sports.
I know it's gonna get tedious, almost petulantian, sorry. Maybe some of these sets will be of use to someone. Swim this morning, 300 easy, 600 continuous "prone" kick (that's with your head down and arms flat by your sides), then 24 x 50m on 1.20, kind of a sprint set: swim a 50 distance-per-stroke, then a 50 build, then a 50 max, and go through that eight times. The idea is to try to set a 50 max first up then hold that time on each succeeding 50 max. Amazing how many different ways there is to swim a 50m yet get pretty much the same time every time. I'm usually pretty good on sprint sets but the board paddle yesterday must have gassed me a bit, sorta held 30.5sec drifting up to 31 on a couple.

Don't other swimmers get in the way sometimes?

Re: swimming/paddling/misc water sports.
well this is a squad, I'm swimming in a group with a coach, we're all doing the same thing. Like 10 seconds apart so there's no drafting or whatever. No rec swimmers in the lanes. It's all pretty clean. It can suck a bit if you're leading a lane and swimming 200s, every time you turn and swim back up the lane you're encountering wash and current from everyone else coming down the other side, and at the same time you're breaking that wash for everyone behind you. But who cares! Kinda makes you think about surf swimming.
Re: swimming/paddling/misc water sports.
What I really hate about Nick's training schedules is that I read them, and part way in I'm thinking this is really fcuking ridiculously hard, and then, I hit "and go through that eight times".

Agreed, it's like reading a French recipe.
Roll the butter into the pastry.
Repeat until flaky.
I'd be pretty bloody flaky if I had to swim a second 50 on 30.5 these days.
And kicking sets can go and get fcuked in the arse with a pineapple.

this was the one that got me
I realise 1.30 is slow for good swimmers; but for 95% of people its full speed. Also makes me realise my absolute inadequacy as a swimmer

Realsurf Olympic events
Swimming : 25 metres Australian Crawl.
Competitors, without stopping and while maintaining an identifiable 'Australian Crawl' stroke, attempt to complete 25 metres in the slowest possible time. Last competitor to finish wins.

They surely can.
Tomorrow! Coaching the long racing board grommets, 13/14yo, paddle from Mona Vale to Newport, a lil adventure for them
Sunday, I dunno, S wind increasing through the day, I am supposed to do a ski set with some old people, terrific.
No surf so no surf. Well ya never know! A LOT of stretching and shit. The older you get, the more worthwhile that gets.

fcuk, everyone's a kook compared to someone. Sometimes our coach has his super athlete in a lane just over. Sth Korean, Park, won the Olympic 400m in London. His aerobic 100s are done at 53sec. He'll do 24 back to back like that on a 1.10 cycle.

I used to train a couple of lanes over from James Magnussen. I could just about bodysurf his bow wave.
