Mick is a calculated surfer, you can see in his surfing there are times when he adjusts his turn halfway through based on what he sees ahead. And he NEVER gets to the lip early or late. You have to appreciate the technical skill and dedication to the competitive craft. And he's made for right hand points with varying pace.
But I'd never forward a link to a video of his on vimeo.
John John is instinct and talent, just plays what he sees. He'd be useless in a wave pool.
Medina and Toledo decide what to do before they get to a section. Maybe before they leave the beach. And it bores the shit out of me. Medina in forehand barrels is the exception, you have to acknowledge his skill there.

Here are the highlights, Mick covers more distance but JJ finishes his rides with successful air reverses, how about his rail work at 2.40 minutes. The floaters from Mick are incredible and on second watching he gets a lot more vertical.

About 7 years ago, the judges basically stopped awarding points for air reverses. They were far too common.
Bunny hop, half spin. Oh wow! fk off.
The pros know that a plain air reverse is not going to get points.
Mind you, JJF's air reverses were pretty good.

dunno if everyone else picked up on it, but the ad you could skip in 4 or so secs in that link someone posted... well. it was kinda what this whole debate about Euge and JJ s all about.
For me, there's just somethig about Mick's left arm that draws a face of a kid being forced to eat brussel sprouts.

Re: jbay
That'll be a big part of the judicial criteria in the next Olympics skipper, what kind of face a competitor's leading arm traces, until then we're just going to have to suck it up and grin and bear it. Mick has clearly eaten all his brussel sprouts.skipper wrote:
