Other than when the tour is at a place getting big waves I couldn't give a rats about it.

I just can't excited about watching them bounce around in 2 foot slop, I'm sure it takes a lot of skill, but it bores me to tears watching it.

I thought the mid year cut-off was introduced at least in part following Slater's vocal criticism of how long it took to get the hot young blokes not currently on the WCT on it, and how the current format left the blokes hovering around the cut off on tour for a full year. Slater seemed to see them as dead wood.

I agree the mid year cut off is a stupid idea. But it was sanctioned by the surfer reps and at least in broad form advanced by Slater. I'd bet the main reason it was adopted was to keep Slater happy.

I thought it was piss weak though of the ASP to DQ Martinez from a tour he'd been saying for weeks he'd already quit. No biggy there. Martinez probably loves it because it plays to the "bad boy" persona he tries to cultivate.

There needs to be a way to bring big events to metro areas without detracting from the World Tour. I don't know how you can do it - maybe as a tier just below the WCT you have a 4 event grand slam in, say, NY, Huntington, Rio and Manly which doesn't count for points to the World Tour but its compulsory for WCT surfers to compete in? You could have a grand slam winner for these events just like the triple crown in Hawaii. Just an idea. If you planned it right you could fill gaos in the calendar with these events where wave quality is a lesser consideration. Not to say you don't want to optimise wave quality but we're hardly talking about Pipe or J'Bay or Teapou or Bells here.

Slater! What was that? Anyone doubting that was a 10 needs to consider the circumstances - last minutes of a semi. And to take down Kerr and Taj is a feat itself. Like two finals before the final.
