Just having a chat with a mate over a coldie, and the subject came up of how many boards get produced in Australia each year?

Be interesting to hear what people reckon.....

I've heard the Australia market is about 5-10% of total world wide sales?

I'm only able to make an educated guess here but I think I'd pretty close to the mark with about 20,000 new boards made per year made in Australia.

I come to this number by a simple observation at my local beach last Wednesday arvo. There must have been close to 20,000 cnuts were out there on boards that only looked about 12mths old !!!

dunno how relevant imports would be. any serious surfer would be riding a custom or at least a stock rack board anyway. take nsp for example....how many guys do you see riding them in the middle of winter  or better still, when you see one, what ability has said surfer? never anything above the lower end of average in my obsevations

But the real question is how many from each area i.e. SE Qland, Nth Coast NSW, Sydney, Vic, SA,WA, Tassie etc and how many are still hand shaped?
70% from SE Qland and Byron?

90% machine shaped?

all boards seem to be comin off the machine these days....finished by ghosties....signed by shaper/designer.
if you had the coin and bought a machine, you could be a shaper overnight...measure up boards, put in the computer, POW! out comes a 6'2 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/4 hi performance shortie!

whats your take on this pridmore?

Get real, they don't even do that... just another template, hence dimensions and other info on a stringer can be in a different handwriting. Can just see shapers travelling around the world to sign boards.

Some with templates for decal positions too.

There's still a lot you can fcuk up finishing a CNC, it's the final 10% that really counts.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, is there Mr Merrick.

I agree its the last 10 percent that really counts with a board.
The edge on the rails is something that really has an effect for me with boards. Too much edge too far up on the rail infront of the fins tends too cause too much bite and is not forgiving...makes the board feel like it wants to go straigh. I think a hard edge should only start max 2-3 inches above the tail for a typical sydney board. The tranistion should be nice a and subtle too.

I have seen stock Merricks compared to Al shaped merrick and the difference is obvious. I think these to shapers have a magic touch. Biolis shaped Lost boards are also amazing compared to the average pop outs.

I think glassing is a big factor too. A good light glass job makes a board go 10 times better which sucks cause it will break. some glassing also tends to have more life and pop than others even with simlar weight...i got no idea of the theory behind this...maybe to do with the blanks?

Signature template, Mical. Boards are copied left right and centre.

I've heard a certain prominant shaper on the goldy, who has several machines and no less than 4 finishers (and up to 8 or 9) can pump out 500+ boards per week.

It was a competing shaper who told me this, so I took it with a grain of salt. But still ... If he can put 500 plus per week that would australia's number of boards per year fairly substantial.

Would you mind throwing in a little more homoeroticism
