I understand it, it's just unnecessary.

Do you mean a cap? We need a photo of you wearing this thing.

I have a cap and a 1mm titanium hood.

https://needessentials.com/collections/ ... ducts/hood

easy.

Personally I can't understand booties and gloves- you lose all feeling.

Whats the point of surfing if you can't feel anything?

That's a cap. I can understand that, I have one of those.

A hood has the neck portion.
And in my case, I'm talking about one that's connected.

You lose almost nothing by wearing gloves.
Booties are a necessary evil below 15 degrees, without them you'd have to wear more rubber on the body and the benefits would be more than offset. Modern boots are a mile better than those of 15 years ago.

Was down at Narooma on the weekend. Bit colder. Little surf off the break wall.

Booties, gloves, hoods when it’s over 15 is probably unnecessary unless you’ve a circulation problem. Anyone who wears them north of Sydney….well.

I think I'll get one of the isurus suits for next winter and skip the hood. Maybe add gloves to the ensemble.

Hoods suck, I can't imagine why you'd wear one in the northern rivers area.
Told you a million times- it stops wind chill.

Perfectly.

Dawn patrollers here get their ears drilled just like in Vicco.

It's cold air whistling past the ears that causes it.

Hoods are the most deluxe way to instantly feel warm.

I taught a short U.S. Coast Guard produced sea survival section in a first aid class . Our Marine Tech students went to sea every semester, so ran a real risk of shipwreck, and hypothermia -- the North Carolina coast isn't known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic for nothing.
You lose more heat faster from your head than from any other part of your body.
One quote that stands out to me from the USCG info was, " If your feet are cold, put on a warm hat."

OK, a little perspective. Boots you don’t need until the water drops below 13 degrees, gloves around 10. Hood is the worst possible neoprene accessory and is only needed sub 10 degree water and extreme wind chill. There would never be a scenario in sub tropical Australia when a hood is necessary

Tell that to Iggy's ears, if they even work anymore.

I realise iggs goes way south but, wind chill can fcuk the ears even up at Shearer's.

Oh please. I’ve been surfing for 38 years in icy water and freezing wind and my ears are fine. Surfers ear in Australia is basically a hoax outside tassie

Rightio, so I became 90% deaf in my right ear and had an operation to remove the exostosis in my ear that caused it but it was a hoax.

Settle down mate.

You're on a hiding to nothing here, medically and physiologically.

Hardly surprising given the punishment it had been subjected to over the years

There's probably a genetic pre-disposition to exostosis to explain why some regular surfers of a particular beach get it, and others don't.
I got it in both ears, right>left.

Nothing surgery couldn’t fix. Guess you don’t go out enough for it to be a problem :-D-:
My theory is you get it in whichever ear gets smacked by the lip the most. Unless you only surf knee high whitewater

Owning a surfboard for 38 years, doesn't equate to water time.
