Probably because the tomatoes are picked by Syrian immigrants, tinned in Albania and sit on cargo ships for 6 months and we sell discounted wool to the Iti's for Italian fashion. All supported by a trade weighted index and determined by currency strength and weakness.

Are you suggesting goods should incur a tariff for not meeting certain environmental standards or targets?

GDP figures out today. Possibly the first recession since 1991.

Nah it won't be.

No there shouldn't be tariffs, but there also should be consideration of externalities and no subsidies.

Agree on the recession not occurring.

Also agree with the negative externalities but not sure how you would measure and calculate the cost of the social impact and pass back to the perpetrator. I might read up on it but I bet all roads lead back to "Eco Tariffs"

They do, but at the production end not the trade end.

Hardin- 'Tragedy of the commons' is a good place to start

Measuring the impacts is a whole other problem.
Especially when we are destroying the very things that support life itself.

See Costanza et al for example

It would be useless around the eastern suburbs Loof
Unless it's mounted on a wall -you would need some one to do it for you though

There are a few big reef breaks in the eastern suburbs for Loofy to try it out on if he's keen.
