I have tended to agree about trad mal riding but agree with Thudster.....Harley carves. I've been riding an old Tolhurst Fish for a while that is pretty insanely good. Jumping on the equivalent old mal at Hanalei created a similar response. Incredibly fast and super responsive. I would argue a board like that is better suited to Sydney conditions than a trad heavy mal.

I think I may get my hand on an old one because an old mate who has one was talking about getting rid of it. Apart from performance I've been wanting a lightweight mal I can chuck in the car for a while.

I've also been thinking of getting a Walden Mini Magic if I can get one cheap. 68 litres at 7'6".
Why?
Because I've been riding a softie.....like half the Fcuking surfing population at Bondi and a lot of popular places. May as well have the advantages plus some performance.

I like the Walden mini magic 7'2". There's a local guy who rides one as an equalizer for the wave hogging longboard crew. He loves it...excellent wave catcher apparently.

FYI have a look at the new Ocean and earth 7'6" softie they just made. Really flat rocker and feels almost like a normal board under the arm. no bloated rails on it. I ride it finless for shits and giggles.
The MR twinnies they have just made are the same...for a softie they are a real eye opener.
Crowded zoos like Noosa and the Pass would be fun on them. No dings to worry about.

I have not seen a better built and crafted board at any price, and these are $649.

Yeah, I've checked their range out a few times. The thing is it's still a gamble. 99% sure they would work dependably however I know the Tolhurst Boards are a bit more refined. Experimentation is what it's all about as you know, Cranky.

Also you tend to explore what one shaper is doing if it works for you in one instance.
So I rode this Tolhurst on Kauai and then rode a pretty big and clunky Hobie 8'6" at Ala Moana. I wanted something with heaps of volume and that board worked well for that. Would have stuck a bigger fin in it if it was mine and ditched the side bites but it nose rode well and you could whip it around from the tail most of the time. Plenty of trimming speed.

Compared to the other board it was night and day though.

Beanie, I can talk about handmade midlengths with hand foiled fins for hours. Maybe we need a separate thread so boutique hipsters like myself with sensitivity to the artisans don't have to read about such atrocities

Well this is of course because “midlengths” and minimals are interchangeable. A lot of good shapers have been punching out quality boards in that range for thirty years now.

So who enlightened you to the whole midlength board arena any who? Seem to recall a certain ripper who wouldn't touch a board over 6'2 or 6'3" not so long ago with a quiver entirely consisting of midget boards.
