sunride epxoy boards - any good for a learner?

Post by rabbit » Thu May 08, 2014 8:58 am

I don't get out surfing much (so a learner) and it's more for having a board when the kids go out who are just learning too.

I was thinking of an epoxy board for it's durability as it will probably end up being carted around more than it gets used. I'm also looking at 2nd hand, so something around a 7'6 mini mal. I'm currently looking at a sunride board. Are they any good? I don't need anything flash, but I don't want a dud either.

Any other epoxy brands that are recommended above others?

Cheers in advance!

I had a 7'4" version for basically the same reasons, lending to visitors and learners on windsurfing camps.
If you can get past the graphics they are fit for purpose.

It was basically indestructible, surfed okay off the tail, was a bit corky, didn't paddle as well as expected due to having more rocker than a lot of 'backpacker' boards.
Was a good learner board, particularly for smaller people, and could be surfed reasonably by those who were more competent.

Sold it a few years later for more than I paid.

Don't know anything about other brands except for Southpoint (okay in mals, think it was a Bonga Perkins model, normally overpriced), Bic (bulletproof but heavy) and Tuflite shortboards (pretty much what it says, but a bit light and stiff)

Cheers alakaboo for the feedback.

BTW, I was actually thinking of epoxy boards mainly because of my past windsurfing background (15 years ago!). Bic boards (and many other epoxys) were highly regarded back then.

Agree with below. See heaps go out as rentals and other than fin damage from being beached they cop a pounding and survive and also seem to ride a bit better than the DW generics. Depends where you buy it and how much for, you'll get a reasonable amount back when you're ready to go on to your next board

Yep. Nice to have a bulletproof board around to just chuck in the back without too much to worry about.

I see Bic boards are pretty cheap. I can get a 7'3 brand new for $299. Are they heavy compared to other boards? I see that they weigh 5.6kg. How much do other boards weigh?

It's got me thinking...for the same sort of money, I can get a 2nd hand NSP 7'6, or a brand new bic 7'3.

Any suggestions?

Those boards don't really lose their 'pop' so new v old is much of a muchness.
Just pick the one you like best.

If you're going on my comment about the Bics, I think they were waterlogged.
I think they have made them a bit lighter these days, too.

I gather quite a few longboard officianados don't mind the bic mals but I would probably go the NSP in a midlength myself.

I'd go NSP over BIC. My ex had a 7'2 and had a few fun thrashes on it
