mini mal fin advice.

Post by Wal-e » Wed Apr 16, 2014 11:40 am

Having recently purchased a 6 10 mini mal to fill a quiver gap, I'm after some fin advice. I'd like to ride it as a single fin or even a bonzer, but It's set up with the five fcs plug option, with no fin box. My question is, is there a big enough fcs comparable fin that will let me do this?

i am not aware of one. though i imagine the little fcs plugs wouldn't last long with the pressure of a large single fin on them.

If you really want to go that way, i'd suggest cutting out the plugs and routing a box for a single fin in.

You could try an FCS MF1 as a centre fin with bonzer/small fins on the side as a thruster. I use this on my 7ft4 board (my side fins are longboard side fins, so bigger than bonzer but smaller than thruster) for smaller waves. Although I have a fin box for the centre fin, so no idea whether that will cause an issue.

I did end up with this by default, as the 3 fin set for the MF1 was way too stiff and I only had the longboard side fins to play with, but it seems to work well. At least for my level of skill.

if you want to run it as a widowmaker or bonzer get the plugs routed out and a box put in.

any good ding repairer should b able to do it.

if he's a fin man as well get him to foil you up a nice nine inch single fin.

any reason why you bought a 5-fin fcs board if you want a single fin?

Isn't a nine inch fin a bit much for a 6'10, even without side fins?

I use a 7 1/2" greenough in my 9'1" and it flies and turns much better than the 9" one I have. Side fins, what are they!?

no. depends on the waves.
I have a 9 inch flex fin I use in a 6'6 widow for when it's one and a half overhead and above, especially good on the backhand. but it's shoved up the front of the finbox
