Surf Hats

Post by Beanpole » Sat Feb 08, 2014 6:03 pm

So you old baldies what is the best surf hat on the market?
I've got two which I only wear if its extreme and tiny.
One is a bucket. The other is a peak hat with a big bill-FCS.
Both I find less than satisfactory for anything more than a boat ride.
The peaked one is f*cked because if you duckdive the bill hits your nose and wipes all the zink off.

I mean, tastebuds? WGAF?

The best hat on the market. Never mind the white ones in the pics on the website. The darker ones are good.
Mate of mine has used his in Indo many times. Reckons even in solid G-land it has stayed on no problems.
The brims on both the bucket and the baseball style don't flop down.
The sides of the bucket don't droop around your ears cutting off your peripheral vision like others.
The other good thing is your supporting a surfing family that are still producing hand shaped surfboards in their shaping and glassing rooms right out the back of their shop.
Only a rat can win the rat race.

Looks good. I've got a ripcurl bucket hat that looks like that but its a bit annoying. Good for boats though and it looks okay as a regular hat if you tuck the straps up.
My sons first board was a secondhand MC he had made for his son. Unfortunately he had one surf on it before we lost it off the roof of the car   Like the look of a lot of his boards too.

Anyone tried those Oniel long sleeved rashies with the hood?

I'm getting a bit sparse up top, have asked a few guys wearing them in the water what they thought and haven't had a positive answer yet. Like most have said, tiny days only.
You're the Guinea Pig Matt, report back please.

Really fried the top of my head one day at Serengan last year. It's mainly the crown and where it parts down the middle. Generally thinning a bit all over I guess. You would think there would be a product that you could rub into your hair that had sunscreen in it.

I lent a pommie some zink cream before he went out in the surf a couple of years ago. He plastered that all over his bald noggin. :-?
Don't think he really knew what it was.

I've got an FCS bucket which is OK.
Really don't like wearing one, for all the reasons above. I just have a small thin spot on top of my head which burns pretty easily in the middle of the day. To try to minimise damage to my skin, I rarely surf in the middle of the day any more. But I'll use the hat if I have to. Try to tilt it back a bit when I'm paddling for a wave.
Can't really come at tipping the front of the brim up.
It's all a bit too "F Troop" for me.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Years ago I used to tie a normal baseball cap onto the zipper strap of my wetty and flick it off or around backwards when going for a wave.
I still do that sometimes but up here, it's gotta be winter or no wetty strap. :-o

I sometimes wear one of these.

More for surfski paddling or SUP than surfing, but they do stay on if you get rolled. Don't think I've duckdived with one on. The strap can pull through the buckles, but you could stitch it to stop that happening.
They've got a stiffer peaked brim at the front inside the regular one, neoprene strap that covers your ears

Oh, pretty sure they are the ProtecSun ones made under licence for a surfshop in Brisbane.
Currently on sale for $15 bucks each.

ive had 25 years experience wearing them, the buckets are best but avoid billabong and FCS,all the rest of mine have been O&E and they are durable comfy and retain their shape.thousands of sessions and they are standard attire for me,not only avoiding sunburn but cutting plenty of glare as well. 3-)

Clean shaven el rancho? He likes to be photographed in hats

I've got an Oneill version of it. Wore it surfing once, but duck diving was enough for me to stop. Because it's in good condition, I wear it quite a bit. Wife reckons I look like a special needs person

I have one of them Buff things with a peak. It's better than the Oneill because you can just drag it back and it stays on like a scarf. Still don't like wearing it though. Just enough material to be an annoyance
