NPJ 2+1s are heavily influenced by Dave Parmenters Widow maker set up for drive in powerful waves what ever the set up ( points, beaches, reefs). They are also fun in fast hollow waves as they are fast into waves and hold with the single, they are OK in junk but the outline not perfect for that.I wouldn't compare them to Mandalas although I'll leave that to Batoes as I have never ridden one, I have a bonzer and I get the same drive out if the 2+1 but it's looser because I've set the single that way. If you like gouging chucks out of waves, hold and drive in solid waves, like getting into waves quickly and can live without airs they are pretty good. They are expensive I agree but hand shaped board and fins from a guy who has put a shed load of R&D into these boards is worth the extra 100 or so than a machine shaped signature pro board made for well pro's. My art work is beaten to a pulp with patched up holes and sun faded and a leaking tail, time to put it back above the bar.

I concur with your thoughts Davros. I was more interested in the assumptions that there was some extra experience associated in owning a mandala or a NPJ - no doubt because they carry a price tag and have either more or less than three fins. Mandalas carry a hefty price tag due to international freight. It remains a functional board without any pixie dust or growth hormone that helps your beard. I tend to ride a board before i make an assumption about it and its so called "oeuvre" experience.

Problem with a "midlength" _ though less so if surfing cognisor are in the line up _ is you'll be judged by many as a "funboard" rider until you catch a wave. Better make the first one a decent one. If you are allowed the chance. One of the joys of getting older is taking a few waves to warm up. Then again first wave judgement is common to riders of all craft. Its brutally honest out there sometimes.

Yep Roger that Batoes. Surprised Bing Dhamas haven't been mentioned yet on this thread.

Agree Bomboraa. I have a mid-length for the Farm. I guess i'm lucky because so does every other man and his dog out there  We all quietly judge each other....

Hey Davros, I rode a Dharma a few years back! Heaps of fun - but i ended up going for a local shaper, Ado at Rake. I like his interpretation of the short, fat, stringerless boards that are so popular over here at Real Surf.

Side note - my NPJ 2+1 and quartet arrive this week, so i'm sure the flat spell will continue. But, I am really looking forward to my oeuvre experience.

just cut out an outline for a 6'9ish single fin I had planned to shape on an old blank, turns out my outline template was wonky so after cutting it out and seeing how fucked the flat spots were and realising I couldn't really fix it I just ended up punching the whole board in half

fuck my life right now

Thanks Nick

Steve all four shapes are 8' by 25" the first two at 2 inches thick and the second two at 2.75" thick. They'll be glassed with 3d glass.

Roy, 3 D glass? How does that differ from the usual.?

I'm intrigued.

The 3d glass which we have is 3mm thick so the blanks have 3mm taken off everywhere to compensate for the thickness.

Some similarity yes.

I've been doing this shape since 1999 in lengths up to 14'9" it also works well as a 6 footer. The tail is much narrower than a scorpion, the rails are less bulky through the centre, it has continuous single concave and more width.

Yours look, aesthetically, infinitely better. I want to hang them on a wall rather than surf them. Beautiful proportions (from a visual sense).
