Hi fongs, the short answer is that they are a crucial aspect of the boards which I design to take them

Some of my designs have them, some don't.

I know that's not very helpful, sorry, but if you have more specific questions I'm happy to answer them.

You are talking about aerodynamics. In that sense the wind speed experienced does not depend entirely upon wave size.

Round noses are less likely to stall than pointy noses, in general, provided that they are nice and thick. Thin noses whether pointy or round are a bane aerodynamically.

9'6x 21 3/4 x 3 1/4 for James Hollmer Cross to get busy with in Tasmania...

here's one i knocked up this arvo ... not a full blown gun - it's a 7'4 x 19 1/2 x 2 7/8. but basically comes from the outline of an 8'0, with the tail chopped and a big swallow put in. concept "borrowed" from the bolt guns tomo made a while back.
