Just finished reading a Michael Connolly book Chasing The Dime. Sub Plot involved big tech not wanting any game changing technology and referred to the story of the guy who invented a new rubber than never wore out. Tyre manufacturers bought the patent and stored it in a safe. Built in obsolescence is where it’s at with surfboards too.

On that type of thing, I saw a documentary a while back about Los Angeles in maybe the 50s and the car manufacturers bought up all the bus companies and shut them down.

Not sure if it's right but it sounds like it could be.

I could google it but I thought it was either Ford or GM buying (and dismantling) the light rail in LA (I think).

Same with trams. Remember Brisbane had an electric tram system in the 60s. Sydney ripped up all the tram lines about the same time.

The difference was that private companies bought them in the US and dismantled them with the express aim to increase demand for their products.

Lots of people, my wife included, reckon it was a terrible decision.

I'm not so sure. Brisbane is a big sprawling city and covering it with a network of tram lines was probably never going to work in the long term.

Sitting up on the open top deck of a tourist bus I reckon I could have jumped up and grabbed the wires.

Don't remember hearing about any electrocutions but I did see a guy killed by a car while he was cleaning out the tram tracks.

Blew me away how sketchy the cable cars were in San Francisco. Manual turn around on a rotary set of tracks and minimal clearance for parked cars next to the tracks for most of the ride. Everyone had to squeeze in and the conductor had to tilt a trucks side mirrors so we could fit through at one stage.

Up until fairly recently the buses followed the tram routes, and went to places that were busy in the 1940s.

Up until recently in Sydney the buses followed fairly obvious routes. Now it’s obscure and you need to consult your directory for all journeys. No more just jumping on a bus to Circular Quay or Railway Square. Then they cancel them if they are running late.

Annandale to Neutral Bay being a fair example of an odd combination.

In Melbourne the trams just seem to follow the traffic flow and rules (lights etc). Sydney is a bit like a 3rd world city with people wondering in front of the trams etc..note girl killed last week in Haymarket under tram the poor dear.

Sydney is renowned by traffic planners as a centre for pedestrians walking on red lights and jay walking. Generally ignoring signs and risk taking behaviour compared to other cities.
