i haven't watched an event all year. the surfers don't interest me, the commercialisation doesn't interest me and the try-hard'ish NFL presentation definitely doesn't interest me.

it's really meh

Why wouldn't they? They're a profit driven enterprise. Brazil has how many times our population? Good business sense to cut the dead wood and chase a bigger customer base.

I watched a heat of the women's last night. I think it was the worst surf I had seen for a main tour WSL event. Small, onshore mush. So early in the window too. The forecast must be very poor.

You see why they would want an event there though, with the crowd at last year's final.

the big problem with rio is, while they get plenty of crowd & sponsorship, more then any other event ... none of the surfers want to go there and no one from anywhere in the world is interested in watching the event online. A bunch of pros saw some guy get shot & killed one morning by the contest site the other day, and someone else had all their shit stolen. the surfers are going to be digging deep into their excuse note bag to not turn up there next year.

also ... word around the place is contractors and athletes with anything to do with the wsl aren't getting paid, and when they do it's months late. if that's true, the wsl is living on the same amount of borrowed time the asp was.

Exactly, its about online and pay TV viewing not a bunch of Trannie loving Brazzers waving flags on a shitty beach break.

That Medina 2 manoeuvre combo is pretty awesome. I can't remember seeing a combo like that pulled off with such seemingly relaxed ease.

Haha! If that is true for Rio then it is also obviously true for holding comps in all those big city crappy waves like they used to do until the surfers revolted and threatened a breakaway tour.

How can anyone sit and watch this rubbish. That claim is exactly like the one he did after his shitty backflip - the little cnut needs a bullet, its infuriating to watch - someone trying to be cute is the worst.

there's a poo outfall pipe in rio, the next beach down. any kind of southerly blows it right through the contest area. being robbed, shot or for the girls even worse are totally plausible outcomes. it's not just the shit waves, but all this other stuff which makes it a legit nightmare.

rio is all about the cheese. medina has 4.5 million followers in insta, and has more sponsorship dollars than a MLB player. it's big business right now to be in brazil.
