I've been on here defending the mid-length on several occasions.

For years, well before mid-length was even a "thing" I rode mid-lengths, mini-mals, single fins blah, blah, blah. Just because I had got bored with shortboards and wanted more trim, glide, projection and power in my surfboards. I'd be the only one on the line-up apart from kook beginners on the craft. I still love riding them when the feeling feels right.

The simple fact of the matter now is that mid-lengths have become very fashionable and hence prices have risen accordingly. You pay a premium because the boards are in demand. It's pricing according to what the market will bear. Despite that the concepts are pretty simple so it's not some kind of RnD you are paying for.

Personally I think there are two concepts to grasp:1): The eggy type , which should be ridden longer in the six ten to seven three range, coming from the 67-69 phase of the shortboard revolution. Go watch Innermost Limits to see how they should be ridden. The emphasis is on early entry with high paddle speed, deep take-off to high-line cut-down, using the rail for angled entry.
And 2): More pointed nose variants stemming from mid seventies Aus shortboards which are more pocket rockets and should be ridden in the 5'10"-6'3" range. Wide-point forwards with power features in the aft rail and bottom shape. The bottom turn projection comes from the wide point forwards and the looseness is off the tail. Bonzers go great with this. two pls one.

Yeah, I wasn't implying you were crapping on hybrids or midlengths Steve sorry. I know you've owned a few malcom bros boards etc. More that higher level surfers don't like them, and I can understand why they wouldn't.

I had a 7'10" midlength that was pod shaped. Like a mccoy nugget but not as crazy thick. Almost identical nose and tail lengths, and wide point slightly behind centre. Finned as a thruster it was so much more loose than a board that long could be ( under my feet anyway ). I'm sure the wide point back made a big contribution to that.

Have you had a look at the Grant Miller or Mark Richards boards? I'm sure they could refine them up a bit more if you wanted.

I have. Miller boards look too eggy / soft railed for my taste. I have fondled many an MR, but never forked out for one. His boards look beautiful, balanced and refined. But not the mid length vibe I've got the horn for…

I once had a 5'8 webber CD (i think that was the model - it was a second hand custom without markings). Loved it, i love webber's concaves and rails, but it was too small and kinda neutral feeling.

Haydn Lewis mid lengths are close to $900. Bit too rich for me, I'm looking for a 2nd hander..

those boards in byron are all high fashion items aimed at cashed up wannabes mostly, those high quality polished and pigmented glass jobbies don't come cheap.

I've seen some gato heroi and vouch boards in the main street there.

FWIW, I have ridden a HK and it was farking sensational in the right conditions

But just like the wafer boards of the 90's, if you didn't buy the right volume then you probably aren't getting the most of them,

and deciding the right volume is critical.

For mine, they are damn good boards, but not as good as the simon anderson mollusc

if you get the right volume.

I've had a go on the 5'8" and while the overall volume was fine, I struggled adjusting to having a board that short. In the end, with surfing time limited for me at the moment, I didn't want to mess around learning to surf something that short. That and the 90's fad which I fell for of skinny and heavily rockered boards set me back for a few years. I surf what I know works for me.
