The board is 100% handshaped , the lines are from a fly screen gauze he uses to finish the rails off. Neal doesnt always fine sand the rails as he believes the slight grooves allow the resin to sink in and adhere to the rails better.
Neal hasnt used machines for a number of years, when he has in the past he has always just had the rails cut square for him to finish himself.
Absolutely top bloke.
Personally, the 'handshaped' thing is irrelevant to me, but it is a HUGE industry issue with many 'shapers' doing everything to allude to their product being so, when in fact it may not ... I'm not saying that is the case here, just saying ...
Out of curiosity, how far apart are the 'ridges' on your board? Any chance you can whack a tape measure or ruler across them and maybe take a pic?
Re: post your modern day sickness
Learning to do my own, that sure has proven interesting ... I've found a connection with the whole process, and weirdly enjoy every step. The sanding is very cathartic for me.fongss wrote: ... sanders make or break 80% boards anyway ... behind every good shaper ... is a awesome glasser/sander ...

I'm not 100% convinced.
Unless he's got some sort of magic flyscreen that only has lines in one plane, I don't know how you get that pattern

smartest thing you've ever said.
Luckily around here, we've got a surfeit of master glasser/sanders.
They don't get the glory but they are instrumental in making the best boards.
Kenchy is the guru around here.

There's a couple pic a couple pages back. No way you could measure them unless you maybe had calipers, tiny grooves.
And yeah, to be honest, don't really care what cuts down the initial 90% of the board. As long as it is finished to spec by the shaper.

to leave no doubt about Neal Purchase Jnr's business integrity:
I just put these lines on the rail of a finished blank with some gauze screen
identical to the pic drailed posted earlier
