I’ve just started shaping my first board.
5’10 MR inspired twin fin.
Cut from a 6’4 burfords MB blank my mate had lying around.
Based off a 1980 retro pro but I think I’ll do a vee entry to single to double concave to vee exit instead of full length vee.

So far I’ve cut the outline, shaved it close to the width and just started taking to the rails. I’ve spent about 8 hrs on it so far, but I’m moving pretty slow :)
I think by stealing a design the chances of being a complete dog are reduced somewhat.

Looks great buddy! Where are you putting the fins?

Stolen exactly from the MR 1980 pro. Back dot at 1” 3/4 from the rail.
Just going straight twinny, fcs 2, if I were to need a trailer I’ll surf a different board.

So like 9" from the tail? Some folks are using this type of fin if the board is too slidey with no tailer:

Ah, 10” from the tail if the swallow was squared off.
I’ll probably use fcs power twins.
They look good though.

The Mick pierce twin I had was so loose that every other twin I’ve tried since has felt easy to control.
My mate shaped this board as a 6’2 and I had a go of that and I liked it but I’m just copying it to the same dims as the one the template was taken from, more or less.

He took down all the measurements already so I’m cheating big time.

10" seems a bit far up to me. Modern twins are 8.5" - 9.5" I think MR's 6'2"s were 9.5"

Well the actual 5’10 MR was sitting there and we re-measured before drilling the plugs and it was 10”

Were you measuring to the back of the fins?

I'm thinking about making a copy of this one:

Different animal but the Aipa looks like 9" up.

That looks great.
That guy rips too.
A shape like that with the modern foiled performance rails is probably a bit beyond me for my first go.

A chunky 70s/80s style rail like an MR is a bit easier and more forgiving of mistakes I reckon.

I measured the placement along the stringer from the imaginary squared off tail to in line with the fin’s rear shapers dot.

I did a bit of google hunting and found a pic of MR‘s original templates and it said 10” and 1” 3/4 as well. So it adds up to our measurements.

His original was a 6'2 but seems he's done the tail of the 5'10s exactly the same.

Yes you're right, don't where I got 9.5 from. If the tail is the same width it'll work.

Well, MR’s shop is.
MR is the most anal retentive shaper in the world.
