Marvin was a gem.

He was part of a wild bunch of characters and did some mad things for sure, but he had a good gentle heart and was a fantastic guy to go surfing with, partly because of his amazing skills, partly because he was one of those surfers who radiate surf stoke around a lineup.

In a different time he might have gone down different paths. People dismiss suicide as the act of a coward, but we're not all made of fcuken stone; who knows what burdens his conscience made him carry? Feel sadness and compassion for him and the kids he's left behind.

Can be a heavy weight to carry for some, unfortunately too heavy at times.

Sad what some feel they have to do to escape.

Sympathies to his family and friends : thats gunna leave painful hollow for a long time.

I honestly hope that amongst all the eulogizing there might be some spark of recognition that the tacit approval or un-reporting of Hawaiian thuggery/criminal behaviour by the surf media might start to change.
That is gunna take a lot of courage and something like real Journalism : something I'm not sure anything related to surfing is ready to embrace.
It sure will take more guts than outing a gay, manic depressive or making a racist mountain out of some drunken remarks.

The problem of hawaiian gangsterism has been a festering boil on surfing for a long time and vested interests are at stake, as well as real money and bad people with guns, drugs and seriously skewed moral compasses.

But I wouldn't expect any change. There'll be a media frenzy of eulogizing making a very flawed figure into a Saint and then next season will see the same hackneyed mythology of the North Shore.

Perhaps you're up to the task Steve, you've said more in that post than all the journalsim I've ever read on the subject put together.

Oh I've read many articles about 'heavy localism' and 'showing respect on the NS', but none have really ever done anything other than espouse the virtues of those who perpetuate it.

What goes on in the streets behind the corpo houses?

I'd like to see someone tackle it, but I'd imagine they'd be lucky to ever set foot on the rock again if they did.

Fund The Pelican to do some investigative reporting. We'll lance the boil 8) Lucky Al on the case ...

"Hi, I'm Lucky Al, veteran crime reporter from Kurungabaa"

"From what mofo? What the f&*^ is Kurngabararaaara"

"From the f**king Pelican, mate. Got it? Good. Now, I'm here to investigate links between ice and meth labs and Hawai'ian surf culture"

"I am going to string you up like a pig, little haole"

"Have a go champ, Coopers flows in my veins. I'm like Popeye only tougher".
