Honestly, it looked much bigger and more critical if you were there.

There were only 3 waves caught on the peak of the swell, and those were just before this one and just as big. Each time the rider pulled into a massive, massive tube, the screams and groans from the 20 odd people watching were incredible. One tube was made, the other was much longer but was not marketable - neither rider had any other option than pulling in.

agree. Outside Corner is insane, bigger the better.

There were so few waves paddled into on that swell, and on just about every swell, as nearly everyone is under gunned.

9'x22"x3.5" would do it

You can see his board chattering away with the speed he had. Was that the Russian bloke?
I mean he got two barrels or maybe three but wonder if a bigger board my have suited better for that particular wave.

I've never seen anyone going so fast on big waves at ulus, I assumed it was the smaller tow board that was the reason - less drag?

I don't think Ulus is ever out of control size wise. It was perfection last year at 35'. There's a few good surfers who make the case for outside corner being a better option than gradjagan when it's really big

So, the swell Jim Banks caught the biggest ulus wave, did he paddle in? What's the biggest a paddle in surfer could handle out there?

I think we'd need the best jaws paddle crew on appropriate boards - Lenny, Kemper, Dorian etc and another similar swell to find out.
I don't see why they couldn't paddle it.
They wouldn't be able to draw lines as well as on tow boards I imagine though.

That morning, I'm told, only 3 or 4 guys I knew from the 'gong paddled out and only one took off and was drilled mercilessly.

When we arrived at around 2pm there were about 60 people watching, no-one surfing. Jim paddled out from the cave and even as he started we could see a huge set miles out to sea.

Jim paddled a ballsy line that would put him just between the outer peak and outside corner. All of those watching could see he was going to take the beating of his life. He made it over the first 3 or 4 monster waves and then the biggest wave of the set was about to annihilate him. Everyone was groaning anticipating the beating he was going to get.

Then suddenly Jim spins around mid-face and paddles for it! Drops in and races down the line. But he's a long way from the corner and as he enters it the whole wave pitches and collapses on him.

I figured it would be at least a minute before he surfaced, if he did at all. Then, suddenly, he gets spat out of the barrel and screams off down the line.

Later that night I asked him how the fcuk did he have the balls to spin around on that wave. He thought about it for a moment or two and said "That's what I do... I'm a surfer".

Jim only had a 7' all rounder that day, he wished he'd had his 9' gun.

As for boards, if you commit mid face with no way to change your mind then just about anything, but its hard enough to get in a position on a big gun, let alone the added criticality and positioning needed for a mid face takeoff. The guys with the 9 footers get the most waves.

Jim said he was shitting himself, he figured he had to make that tube or die, so he scrunched himself up into the smallest ball possible and just hung on. He was as surprised and thankful as everyone else there on that day that he made it out.

There’s a few small hotels on the road to the Baruna that are walking distance from airport reef as well

Our flight from Bali to Tambolaka got cancelled by Garuda citing “Operational Reasons”.
We’ve had to rebook that leg with Wings Air.
I’ve googled, tripadvisored and all that.
Seems we’ll be stung 200,000 rups per board each way.
Does anyone have actual experience in terms of board lengths you’ve had on Wings?
I’m going to take a 6’10. But a mate going with us is talking about taking a 8’1 mal as the forecast is looking average.
Any thoughts?
