Where to surf (Sydney - Gold Coast)

Hey guys, my partner and I looking to drive from Sydney to Gold Coast for the first time next month. Wanted to ask recommended places to surf along the way? Just been surfing for 1.5 years so still pretty new to it. Also, are there any beaches that might have camping grounds for overnight stay? Cheers

Why drive all that way, at THAT time of year.

Get some cheap flights. Save the time, and just go surf the "flowrider" wave thing at Dreamworld.

No need to lug your new boards up either, less chance of damage. Just hire some boards on The Gold Coast if the wind and waves are right.

Funny we call them "road trips" these days since they were the only regular ones anyone took in the old days that didn't involve thongs or a bike. I reckon the surfari north to the Cold Ghost is one of the great surf trips you can do. Dare I say iconic.

Motel wise unless its drastically changed in the last couple of years avoid staying in Coffs since its always significantly more expensive to get a motel room than everywhere else. Port is close to half way and easy to get accom. Foster also but its a bit close. Used to stay at Woolgoolga as a cheaper option to Coffs. Ballina is cheap compared to Byron. GC is cheap compared to just about everywhere else.

Ahh thought over that. Where else would you go to for a week where you can surf here and there but not too expensive? (besides home).

Port is close to half way and easy to get accom

Driving a wagon; it's actually pretty easy for two to sleep at the back (seats removed) which is what we are hoping to do however not quite sure where to find access to shower/toilet etc. every night. Wouldn't have to worry about accom if I could figure this out I guess.

Plenty of quiet camping areas around that neck of the woods but at that time of the year they look like Bondi. Actually a great time to be at Bondi. Offshore, uncrowded for about 2 weeks. Then madness returns.

Plenty of travellers do over nighters in beach car parks. Solves the shower and toilet option. Should you choose this option please at least clean up after your self and don't stay long in 1 spot. TBH I would look at national parks as well and also council camp sites, plenty of secluded options. You could take weeks to do that trip.

i dig your plan but your timing is ballsack. i'd be getting prepared to sleep in the boot, cause campsites are chokkas that time of year. maybe ditch the boards and just bodybash instead?

Byrons public beachside car parks have nighttime parking bans, to stop precisely what you intend to do.
I'm not sure if those rules are enforced. If you are worried you could park on a residential street and probably get away with it. It's ages since the cops charged anyone doing that with vagrancy.
