Be careful with the ear bud, Bud. Don't want to damage your ear drum.
I suffer from it too from time to time. Strangely (because you wouldn't expect it to make any difference) it's worse when my hair is short. Longer, with some hair hanging around the ears seems to reduce the force of water hitting the opening somehow.
Over the years I've tried a few ear plugs but having them in affects my balance a bit (not much to start with either  ).
Or you could get one of those surf hats which do up under your chin. The straps widen out to cover your ears.
ps. I'm working next week, which I was anyway, but I've added on a couple of days the following week (need a few hundred i na hurry 8) )

rubbing alcohol. you can also flush out your ears with a syringe in the shower with warm water, clear out some wax.

don't do that.
try hot water in the shower, gentle syringe.
Then once the wax comes out (it'll melt and make your neck feel odd) and you're dry then put rubbing alcohol in

Good to hear that it's fixed. I'm guessing you have surfer's ear too? I don't think anyone gets way without it. My ears block from time to time and Aqua Ear seems to help clear them. It's also gotten bad enough to see an ENT specialist and he removed some polyps too.

I've just purchased a pack of Doc's pro plugs, sick of the blu-tac and even more sick (Literally!) of the ear infections, will probably have to get the drill out down the track at some stage.

Anyone here tried or is a user of Docs proplugs? verdict?

I'm willing to give them a go, especially considering the alternative is surgery!

I never used them but had to do it for both my boys when they had grommets in their ears. The bastards kept falling out, even with those silly neoprene headbands wrapped around their heads to hold them in.

Turned me off trying them myself in the surf. I've actually stopped using bluetack too but need to get back in the habit (luckily I don't get infections, it's just annoying having the water swishing around in there).

I use them in Winter. They do tend to fall out when there's a bit of power in the waves. Lost a couple over the years. But they do work and are comfortable. Better than surgery down the track.

Make sure you get the right size. It makes all the difference.

I've used them for 15 to 20 years. Only lost one a couple of times. Ditch the cord. Just make sure they fit right.
I used to just use one but now use two. Had my ear drill many years ago as well. I think theyre great because they don't effect hearing at all.

I had one ear drilled over 30 years ago and don't want to go through that again.
I used the Pro Plugs for quite a long time but found the elastic cords a nuisance.
Haved used blue tack and just recently started using ear putty which are clear silicon plugs which you shape like blue tack ( but less messy) and mould to the shape of your outer ear. They are about $7 at the chemist

I used that too but one fell out after a small wipeout so figured they're not worth the hassle.

Interesting to hear that losing the proplugs isn't such an issue. Might give them a try.

OK well after a trip to the Maldives and a subsequently cnut-ish ear infection I have just discovered that I have bony growths that have almost closed up both of my ear canals and I have to get them drilled out.

Crap!

Guess I better read through this thread then.

PS: Am getting Clive Chappell the ENT bloke who has worked out of DY for 30 years. Anyone know him?

No direct experience, but a good mate has long suffered. Had one ear drilled out ten or twelve yrs ago. Lots of pain and a longish recovery. Other ear done last year. Same surgeon, updated technique. Way less pain and suffering apparently. Quicker recovery. All the best

Have read some scary reports but swvic's update holds out hope for a reasonable solution.
Wishing you all the best.

I've used pro plugs for probably 15 years.....without the cord. Rarely lose them. Usually if you don't put them in properly or if they are getting old. Usually just wear them out after a couple of years use.
I think I'm probably due to have another round of drilling but after the last round I'm avoiding it. It's one thing to have slight hearing loss and blocked ears but when it hits 90% it starts to seriously effect your life.
