I have been looking at a couple of islands off the main island of Mauritius, there looks like some good possibilities for waves..

But I have only gotten as far as the "wouldn't that be sweet" part, havent put much thought into it

Spent a year both Reunion and Mauritius in 1990/91. Reunion has more consistent surf ..... St Leu is world class but if you get Tamarin Bay firing then that's a step above. Have to be lucky though. Mauritius more English speaking friendly and Reunion full on French so learn a bit. And Salty if you have just broken up with your girlfriend then I'd favour Reunion because the island has possibly the hottest looking girls on the planet. African Creole. Leaves Brazil for dead in those stakes...... but learn some French monsieur.

Be interested to hear how you go.

Been to Mauritius a bunch of times(had friends that live there).. Have got Tamarin bay good and it is a good wave but having said that i wouldnt go to Mauritius to surf.Tamarin bay needs a bigger swell and you could be there for weeks before you get any.Plenty of reef sharks and great fishing> quite expensive.A shit box car that you would pay $500 in Australia would costs about $30 000 there !
If you are going to Reunion think about doing a house/flat swap. No white sand beaches there like Mauritius but better waves.

If you are a bit concerned about sharks then DON'T go, I know locals in Reunion that won't surf certain areas, attacks are common...ish.

Mauritius has good swell and grrreeat setups around the South West and South East , copping southerly swell from the roaring forties .
The surf is a long way out on fringing reefs or at a few places where the reef is closer to the mainland like Tamarin .
Tamarin does require a decent swell , because it is sort of inside the fringing reef (or where it bends in to the coast ) but it does not need as big as many suggest .
Further to the east are a number of passes in the reef a long way out that produce good lefts and a couple rights and pick up heaps more swell . T-Bay can be flat while One -Eye is 6 ft and peeling near Le Morne .
Base yourselt in/near Le Morne and ...bango ..... you will get surf most days .

If a bit smaller and North to westerly winds try east of Le Morne where there are a good number of great set ups .

It's quite cheap if you stick to local life and away from the resorts .
