the calculation is a complex formula performed by monkeys that has little relevance to yur actual marks.
for example 2 students i know undertook the same 5 2 unit subjects.
Maths General - 92, 85
English Standard - 88, 79
Economics - 79, 82
PD/H/PE - 75, 81
Chemistry - 72, 69
Monkey A works out that the first student is very good at maths and is ok at stuff so he comes up with the formula
92+88+79+75+72\ 5 + 7.32 because he likes that number = UAI 83 (it doesnt but monkeys cant calculate)
Monkey B is a horny little bugger and therefore likes the number 69 so decides this mathematical formula will suit student B
Highest mark + 10 = UAI 95
There wwe have it folks simplified UAI calculation!
Honestly i dont know how they work it out. If there is no set formula and scaling range for each subject and your ranking how do they wokr out that someone deserves 40 and another deserve 85?

i was at school 2 years ago my marks were between 73-83
subjects legal studies, business studies, ancient history, maths and english..
all assesments i was even better in..
same subjects, very similar marks to my mate... his uai was 12 points higher.. makes no sense at all
The reason that some peoples marks can be similar and yet they get quite different UAI's even though they're doing the same subject is this:
If you look at the bell curve for the marks awarded for a subject, you notice that everyone is bunched up in a pretty small margin, and it begins to drop very rapidly when it gets down to a certain mark. Now say for English, if person A gets 76 in, and person B gets 72, the two marks appear very close, however in actual fact there is a huge difference in the weighting of those marks. The person who got 72 has started to fall down that steep drop because the overwhelming majority of people in the state got over 72. So he will be scaled down quite a bit, while the person who got 76 has pushed in front of a significant amount of people and won't go as badly.
if that sorta makes sense. i made the numbers up though, i can't remember the numbers from when i did it.
