anyone ever sealed their own wetty?
a mate and i were out on the weekend; getting real cold and envious of those people with sealed steamers.
wondering if anyone has ever had any luck in sealing their own existing wetsuit...other thoughts?
cheers.

sealing a wettie
Youngo,
A friend in the auto trade, who surfs regularly put me onto a product called Sikaflex, it's a silicon-based sealing compound and there are a few different varieties for different applications so read the labels.
I fixed some seams on a steamer that were out and out HOLES where the stitching and glue had given up. Can't report how successful it was because I replaced it before using it again, but I can tell you this much, I tested the seams after fixing and they were very flexible and didn't come adrift when pulled at.
It's as messy as all get out to use so don't do it on mum's dining room table!
I masked the inside of the seams with masking tape before applying and smoothed it out with an old paddle pop stick to avoid any irritatants.
Give your local hardware store a call, but don't just use any silicon. The Sikaflex is industrial strength.
Good luck!

sikaflex does a good job on tears to the seams and small holes, apply it on the area needed and then spray it with a mix of soap and water about 10 to 1 this makes it very easy to work and also stops it sticking where you dont want it to , also spray the paddle pop stick or your finger with the same stuff before working it. Dont be scared to use heaps of soapy water when the sika drys it will stick fine.
haha, reminds me of the monkey joke johnno posted up a while ago:snakes wrote:There's animal love & theres taking things too far besides, seals don't need wetsuits

whats the point of sealing the seams? the waters just gonna seep through the porous (sp?) material anyway isn't it?
I had a look at my excell wetty today, and you can see the seams around my chest where the material is a watertight rubber, are sealed seams, and elsewhere, i.e. legs arms waist etc the material is breathable, the seams are just normal lookin, which makes sence to me.
ps. i know little or nothing about wetsuits
pps. i sound like fong. save me
