Hi
I'm looking to buy my first board
I've been surfing for a little while, so i have the basics, but i'm not what you'd call experienced
While i was learning i was mainly surfing on 8'6 softboards, and not long back moved on to hardboards
I used a 7'10 the other day which i really liked
Basically i want a board that i can progress on, i'm 6'2 so i'm not looking for anything too small, i quite like the longer board
I'm considering both new & second-hand
I was wondering if anyone could give me some idea of the type of board i would be looking for and the price
Regards
Andy

Hi Andy, go with what you like!
You've probably got a lot to learn about waves and how they move before you start developing real turns and a style to suit some sort of custom equipment. Anything on which you feel comfortable will be good for this stage of your surfing life.
Go the second hand good condition 7'10" or thereabouts, $300-$400, don't run anyone over, have a great time!

buying my first board
If you come across a 2nd hand Mccoy Nugget give it some consideration.
Expect to pay around $400.
Some of the reasons why these boards are the best mini-mal design.
Widest point and rocker apex 3 inches below half way[which should be point where front foot is] means they turn like a board 6 inches shorter.
Softer rails mean more forgiving when turning.
Strong, practical glassjob, 2 6oz deck ,1 60z bottom.
Bouyant and easy to paddle.
For someone your size suitable dimensions would be 7'2"+length,21" wide and 3" thick.

Hi
I'd go the 7'6 or 7'2 NSP. They turn quicker than some of the others mentioned, they don't get damaged as easily and are quite bouyant.
New will cost you around $450.00 from Dripping Wet or Wicks an extra $100.00 will get you a leggie and a hard cover. (I have no connection with either store! Just always got good deals there.)
The only drama is some locals may not take you seriously.
I'm around 6' & 80kg I have 5 boards, but most often pinch the kids NSP.
Avoid 2nd hand unless you are cash strapped but can afford to upgrade the following season
