Where's 15ft getting measured from? there's a bloody big difference between a 15ft face and a 15ft wave.

And how do ya vote on this thing anyway?

Oop's better go.

if your talking about the face, you usually mention that.

yeah, there's so much debate on where the wave is measured from that you'd need to put down all the rules before starting a poll on it.

Don always says 'head-high', there was some forum debate about a wave down at coogee the other day, and they were all wave face, but I'm still used to 'back of wave' measurements in a way. they all make sense in their way, but power is the real measurments if ya think about it.

Anyway. I surfed temples @ Ulu's last October - and judging from the only other 2 out there, it was about 3 or 4 times their height while riding the wave. Slightly crounched that'd make it round 15 - 20ft. So good though that y'couldn't fall off, even on my 6'0" shortboard. One of the others surfing was this girl - and she was charging it. Best I've seen of live big waves for the girls. (Thought I'd mention the girls, just had a chat about girls in surfing with someone).

Also surfed in South Africa, south of Cape Town, and that was getting up in that 15ft face region too. 5 degree water, 35deg air. Really wierd.':?'

Locally, had some biggish ones at DY 2 weekends ago, and the few weeks b4 that at the Bower, few days at the beach at S.Steyne. DY gave me a 45minute paddle that w/e.

And once I was told that the wave I went over the falls on was 12ft (from the back), but that was 15 years ago and the person who told me was about 15 too - might have been a touch of exageration.

Ahh the memories. Enough from me, bring on the swell tomorrow I say.

Later boys and girls.

I think Nick Carroll will win this but I spent three months living at Sunset Beach one year and surfed it up to absolute max, feathering all the way to Kammies..........they say it doesn't hold twenty so I'll claim eighteen.

On the wave scale question I think for most purposes, ankle, knee, waist, O/H, double O/H, triple O/H etc is probably the easiest to understand......all assuming an average height 5'8" - 5'10".

With a shoulder in there somewhere too BB, but what happens when it's overhead (so 5'10"-ish face) + waist high.

We're talking about a wave which is 8'6" or something. It's not quite 2 men, but it's certainly not one man high.

So much of this is perception too. SO..we live in a place where it tends to be about shoulder high most of the time. We're not NShore, we're not the Med. Kind of average on wave size fronts. An 8ft wave has the perception of being the beginnings of a big wave. 1-2ft is small, 3ft is fun, 4ft is most peoples perfect, 5ft adds challenge to fun, and 6ft is challenge, 7 is getting there, 8 is getting big. But that's all perception because 8ft Cresent Head Point doesn't look like 8ft Winki, or 8ft Barrenjoey. It just sits in your subconscious as what is managable and if it's looking managable, it's 6, if it's looking big, it's 10, but is it a true reflection of what size a wave is?

And does it matter?

MMM, anything on this Don?
