They both scare the shit out of me. I was way more comfortable street skating.

After moving to Sydney from Fremantle at about 8-9, we ended up in Five Dock. That massive bathtub was my introduction to bowls and I was pretty intimidated. The thing I like about surfing is you take the drop and then happily, you don't need to do that again on the other side. At speed. 😀

There was an amazing BMX rider there with a shock of red hair called Weetbix (as he was the silhouetted rider at end of the ad IIRC) and an amazing skater who dropped in off the vert sides called Snake Eyes, whose eyes were decidedly reptilian.

Any of u guys old enough to remember the ill fated skate park at Ryde?
Back when it was a lot of industrial area.
Various mums took turns to drive us out there.
There was a 6 and 12 foot bowl, a freestyle area with ramps and a BFO half pipe with 10-12 foot vert.
Ozi Skate was about all the gear available

That lumpy old over-vert half pipe at five dock is the onshore cape solander of skate bowls. I’d never skate that thing. You’d need to be young and mad

The biggest thing to adjust to with going from surfing to skating bowls is remembering to push ‘off’ rather than through. Aside from that, I reckon both compliment each other in many ways. Picking lines, keeping consistent speed, timing and reaction, etc.

It’s been about two years since I’ve skated transition. Braithy has inspired me to get back into it again. There’s a tonne of skate bowls within relative short distance from where I live. No excuse not to start back up.
hells yeah iggs! do it!! espesh now with the surf being further away than what good bowls are. its funny... i remember watching vids of you on facey, and that's what planted the seed for me to get back into it.

I'm loving it so hard right now, haha. there's a monster 14ft indoor wooden vert ramp near me. just thinking about that kinda drop and all that speed makes my palms sweaty. lol

not sure if you've joined this facey group, but it's pretty solid. lots of inspiration here. guys in the 50's still charging.

Love it crabmeat! Steve, here's some photos of my new favourite thing. I love this board, the wheels are amazing. I was cruising along the other day and actually let out an exclamation of joy at how smooth and fast the thing went. For the last 25 years I have had small street wheels which are great for tricks/grinds/slides etc, but man they jolt the body. This is like getting behind the wheel of an XB Falcon after driving a Barina with bad suspension.

Pad up Braithwaite. Sooner or later, momentarily you’ll forget you’re on concrete and think you’re on water. For example, you might try blowing the tail on a backhand grind then suddenly realise that concrete don’t budge.
you reckon i can get away with just knee pads?

other than some big drops i'm not doing anything extreme. some big fakies on the 7-footer is about as wild as i've gotten. haven't even tried to go backhand yet except for a few fades off the copping here & there.
Pad up Braithy, I just don't envisage snapping bones being a good thing for you right now. Go the full set.

Nup. They were built after I either left or stopped skating at the time. God Bowl Mansfield. Go check that out.

And I don’t really get into half pipes, they’re more about doing tricks. Bowls allow more of a surf/carve flow

Just left meadowbank. first skate in two years. bowl is 3 metres deep at one end and 2 metres deep at the other. Super smooth and ultra slippery surface. My wheels are riddick hard compound, like 101A or something. Found it hard to pick a lateral carve line as it was so damned slippery, so played it safe for now with kickturn lines under the lip. Couple of older blokes ripping.

Telopea. 3-4 foot deep, fairly mellow transitions, lines for days

OK I’ve not been skating since the Ozi Skate days and need some tips.
Daughter is getting past the cheap Big W Mambo skateboard so we’re upgrading.
Got a deck she likes, (31 by 8”) Know the truck width, can you guys recommend some wheels?

General street use, she will have a shot at the (smooth concrete) skate park too.

TIA

Talk to this mob. Based Redfern but probs send them to Coffs

For wheels based on mix of street and skate park use - don’t go too hard compound, maybe 94A tops. For pure street you can go softer, pure park hard as you like.

Yep, when all I did was street it was 60mm 90a powell cross bones. My current board has 101a 56mm minilogo things which seem ok. Fine on ramps anyway. Bit clattery for street

My son is down at Meadowbank pretty much every waking moment when he's not at school. I'll be taking him down there again tonight - with my daughter riding her bike around the paths and me on my '86 retro board. I'll just stick to cruising; not way I'm getting in the bowl on that death machine!
